Help with Trewolla/Carthew link.
« on: Saturday 21 January 23 12:46 GMT (UK) »
Hello everyone.

I am hoping that someone can point me in the right direction to find additional information about a marriage between Thomas Carthew' and the Trewolla family in the 1500's, and also there children. It is likely that Thomas Carthew' was born between 1570 and 1580, and died in 1621. It is also probable that Thomas birth will be before 1574 as his younger brother was baptized in 1574 (providing I have that bit correct).

There are various bits and pieces around this on the ancestry type sites but currently there is nothing that I can find that confirms anything. I am primarily interested in the Carthew Family.

What I do have is, in the book A historical history of Cornwall a section on the Carthew's (p52) startes that Thomas married the daughter and Hieress of John Trewolla of Canaligy (gent) in St Issey. They then have a son Thomas etc.

The difficulty is that I cannot find any marriage record for this, or a relevant birth for any of there children (They're is at least one child called Thomas born). I also cannot work out which Trewolla Thomas married either. A link in this period between the two families appears likely as Thomas quartered arms are mention in the Trewolla section of The visitation of Cornwall. Further to this I cannot find and both/death/marriage records for the Trewolla family in this period at all.

There is a marriage in 1592 between a Thomas Carthew and an Ann (no last name) at St Column Major, Ann dying in 1592 a few months later. There is also a marriage between Thomas Carthew and Alice Callaway in 1606 at St Issey. But no obvious son Thomas.

I am a little stuck with this and am hoping for some suggestions as to where to look. For example are there other historical texts that I should look at?

Hopefully this makes sense.

Cheers for any help

parish baptisms for St Issey start in 1596

Various Carthew/Cardewe + variant baptisms in St Columb Major but no Thomas in the period you're looking for.

John Carthew died in St Columb major in 1590. His will has been transcribed and is on the OPC parish page. It mentions his property at Cannalisie in St Issey, executor is his son Thomas. You can access the will on Ancestry.

Burial in St Issey 8 Jan 1620 of Thomas Carthew, haven't found a will yet.
Burial in St Issey 8 July 1629 of Alice Carthewe, widow. Her will is referred to in the 'Calendar of Wills and Adminstrations: Devon & Cornwall 1532-1800'. It's possible that the will no longer exists as an amount of records were lost in the Exeter Blitz.

Thank you for the information. I have a feeling this is going to be like finding a needle in a haystack at the moment.
