Thanks Lu, Cora's age is stated as 75 on cemetery records which is why I have equated her to the 1882 date. Her fathers obituary states there were 5 sons and 6 daughters, two had predeceased him,  unknown why both births were recorded as male.  There is another thought that William Marshall travelled to New Zealand with Leslie George Alfred Barwick, Leslie was the same age , born 30 July 1879, they would have grown up together at Cleveland. Leslie settled in NZ and married in 1803 to Mary Ryan, he became a bridge worker and later a cellarman, he died in Dunedin. Thanks for all the work on checking deaths of the William's

And it's odd that the father Sydney should have registered the birth of an unnamed male child (rather than a female child) one month after it's birth on 28 February 1882.   Or did the registrar make an error about the sex of the child ??

On the actual image of the birth registration you can see that the information about the birth of the child in 1882 was provided by the father by a letter. Possibly his handwriting was difficult to read and misinterpreted.

I don't know whether it has been mentioned before, but in Sydney MARSHALL's obituary in 1913 it mentions his 5 sons (2 predeceased him)  and 6 daughters. The chief mourners were "his sons", no mention of a son who may have gone to NZ at this stage.

Hi craigbarwick01

Have to say that the additional info which minniehaha has provided at Reply # 19, looks very promising ... especially age-wise and "last from Australia".   ;)

That particular William MARSHALL appears on the following electoral rolls :

Auckland West
1919 and 1922
MARSHALL - William - Sacred Heart College - occ:  Labourer

1925 and 1928
MARSHALL - William - Sacred Heart College, Richmond Road, -  farm hand

Leslie BARWICK settled in Otago.   He appeared on Dunedin Central rolls following his marriage in 1904.   William MARSHALL (farm hand/labourer) doesn't appear to have been in same location (Otago).
Difficult (time consuming) to trace their arrival in NZ from AUS (if in fact a record does exist) ... but you can check further at FamilySearch > NZ Passenger Lists.

No sign of Probate record in NZ or Tasmania for this William MARSHALL (d. 1928).

*   Was your William MARSHALL (ordinarily) of the Roman Catholic faith ??

*   Have you searched say, death notices in AUS newspapers for William's extended family .... which might include mention of him ?

*   You didn't say whether you had death cert for his mother Helen, and if that recorded her surviving issue (or listed her children's details in any way)   ???

And not just "last from Australia". A question on the funeral directors' instruction sheet asks:

"Where Deceased was Born".

The answer is "Australia".

His father was "18 years caretaker and member of the Epping Presbyterian Church". From memory other family members were also Presbyterian. Doesn't necessarily mean that William was though.

A Tasmanian death certificate at this time (1922) should show the number of children, but not their names.

Yes, I'm aware that Sydney's occupation involved the Presbyterian church, but that was not what I was asking.
Will await further information from craigbarwick01.

Many apologies for my late reply, I wouldnít have thought that William was Roman Catholic but I have no evidence either way, so little is known of him so nothing is out of the question
