Help finding a Will from the period of Henry 8th
« on: Sunday 22 January 23 16:13 GMT (UK) »
Hello

Would anyone know how I would locate the following historic will. It is referenced in various books however I don't seam to be able to locate the actual will. I am hopeful it might have some clues.

The historic books are as follows
From Burkes and Parochial history of Cornwall the line says "Nicholas de Carthu dated his will 38 Henry VIII, 1537 he was the farther of Thomas Carthu"

The spelling of the name in this entry may have some variance as in the History of the counties of Cornwall almost identical text states. "Nicholas Carthew, lived in the third of Henry VII . He left issue a son Nicholas, who was living in the thirty-eighth of Henry VIII, as is certified by the date of his will"

As such I am not entirely sure of the exact spelling of Nicholas surname.

Does anyone know where to look for this. I have been looking at the National archives and Cornwall OPC however I cannot seam to find a reference to this will.

Cheers for any help.

It might be worth trying the record office in Devon which holds the wills of the Exeter diocese because Cornwall was an archdeaconry under the Bishop of Exeter at that time, but maybe try the Cornish record office first. I know that in Leicestershire I have found wills which are in Leicester (an archdeaconry of Lincoln at the relevant time) but others are in Lincoln itself.

You probably know this, but if it was proved at Exeter, which many Cornish wills were, the original may have been destroyed in the bombing if Exeter in WW11.

Added:
The consolidated index of Devon wills shows over 30 Carthew (and variations) wills, some from Cornwall, but none for a Nicholas. Two for Thomas in Cornwall, 1699 and 1779, so too late for yours.

Have you searched on FindMyPast? They have many will indexed which tells you which record sets wills are in, and physically where they are (or in the case of Exeter, where they were).

Hello thanks everyone who has replied so far.

So yes I am member of Find my past and ancestry. I have searched both as well as family search. I have looked at best I can at the national archive and Cornwall OPC. I have even taken to reading some of the texts of the time. Although I can find some references to the will in a number of books this has not helped much.

I cannot unfortunately find the will. It must have existed at some point. I simply have no idea where to look next. Like started it is possible it has been destroyed, but I would have thought there would be a reference to it at an archive somewhere.

A very perplexing part of the tree. Like advised I am going to try and call the different archives next week.
