Mary Mackenzie b 1858 Latheron Caithness

Hi whilst looking on the 1921 Census I noticed
my great grandmother Mary Sutherland nee Mackenzie was born at sea. I know nothing of her family but do know the Sutherland's originated from the Orkney isles so not sure if her mother was crossing over to the mainland from Orkney and gave birth to her on board ship. Could anyone throw any light on this please and what occupation would they have been doing in 1858.

Don't you have her on censuses 1861-1911?  What birthplace is shown on those censuses?

You say you know nothing of her family - did she marry in Scotland?  If so - her marriage cert will give parents names

Ok I've just checked and I do have their marriage. Her parents were Andrew Mackenzie and Willamina Larnhac - I think it's spelt something like that. Andrew was a sailor so that's maybe why she was born at sea.

Is she shown as born at sea on earlier censuses as you only mention 1921

No only on the 1921 as far as I know

No I only have the marriage details.

Her birth is clearly shown on SP so why not download her birth cert which will answer your query
