Need help with 1841 document surname
« on: Tuesday 24 January 23 22:12 GMT (UK) »
Hello. Attached is a baptism entry from 1841 in Tullylish. It is for a Samuel born to a John McCann.

I am trying to decipher the mother Mary's last name that appears to be a_ _ esdale or similar, maybe?

Thanks in advance to anyone who has the time to help.

Cheers.

Not sure if this might help. I've put it through some filters,  Will put the snip one shortly.

Thank you.

Now thinking the first letter is not an a (not in cap for A anyways) but possibly an M.

Try this one

Add - I think the last bit might be dale but I can't get much out of one of the earlier letters.

Have you looked for marriages?

This page here on the right side halfway down is where I found it.

Not in the RC registers yet... I have to search by hand so it's slow going. There is a birth in 1833 which is in the first year listed.

Quote
John
McCANN   Tullylish   father of Mary Jane bpt. 27 Jan 1833 at a Tullylish Catholic Church

They don't mention a mother in the 1833 entry. I was thinking this John might be the same as the one I posted about here in this thread.

Quote
John   McCANN      Tullylish   husband of Mary .... dale ; father of Samuel bpt.29 Aug 1841 at a Tullylish Catholic Church

If it is the same John then his marriage would be before the record starts in 1833.

Thanks for the help by the way!

Looking at the original and the first clip posted (but not the other clips), I think it could be Lonsdale or Lansdale, with the main downstroke of the L not visible.

The top of the downstroke is there, as a blob of ink; then at the bottom there is a small loop (looking like a letter a), where the pen turns to the right. It’s similar to what has happened with the S of Samuel in the line above, though that is not as faint.

I don’t necessarily expect anyone to agree with me.
