1870 Ohio Census and then gone
« on: Tuesday 24 January 23 23:34 GMT (UK) »
Hello
Are Ohio records complete?  I can find one only reference of Clara Belle Marwick ever existing.  She is listed on the 1870 Ohio Census records as being seven years of age and child of John and Susanna Marwick at Washington Township, Wood County, Ohio along with her brother William and grandmother Mary Wakefield.  While I can trace everyone else on the record, not Clara Belle.  Did she disappear into the ether.
Thanks
Stuart

There is a Bella MARWICK (domestic) in Canada in 1911. I know it says born England in Aug 1871, however there are no MARWICK children born England that sound like Bella around this time on FreeBMD. A possibility?

Ohio didn't require statewide vital registration until 1908, so it can be a bit hit or miss before that.  She could have married or died before the 1880 census.

No mention of her in John's obituary - https://www.newspapers.com/clip/117188411/

The 1870 census doesn't list relationships, so it's possible she could be a niece or other relative.

She isn't mentioned in Susanna's obituary either - https://www.newspapers.com/clip/117188816/

An article about Susanna's funeral mention some out of town guests, one of which was a niece of Mr. Marwick - https://www.newspapers.com/clip/117188945/

Who appear to be “your” John R and Susanna A Marwick in 1900 and 1910 state Susanna was the mother of one child, one still living.  As shellyesq mentioned, perhaps she was a niece or other relative, or she passed away young and her mother just didn’t mention her.

A very long and detailed article about their 50th wedding Anniversary gives no mention of Clara Belle.  She may have died very young? OR she was not actually her daughter. The 1870 census gives no relationships.

I am indebted to you all.  The articles were sublime, and the hints are all helpful.  John R. Marwick's nieces are somewhat accounted for (or are they?), his brother was in Australia by 1870 and even 1863.  One sister remained in England and is the mother of the out-of-towner "Mrs Russell" alluded to in one of the detailed obituaries.....which leaves an elusive sister Mary Ann who migrated to the US either as a widow or with her first husband James Earl and ended up in Australia as Mrs Barnes to live with her other brother, her death certificate indicates a deceased daughter!
Some much to digest, but I am so grateful of the generosity displayed here.
Thank you ALL so very much.

If the newspaper punctuation is correct, the niece’s name was Mrs. Russell.  I have not yet found her.  Perhaps she might be mentioned in a Weston newspaper at some point?
