Help needed. Family mystery..
« on: Friday 27 January 23 16:09 GMT (UK) »
Hoping someone can offer guidance on this one. We have just found out my grandad had a brother. We were never aware he had any siblings and as he died in 1989 there is no one alive to ask.
On Ancestry I discovered his dads war service record where he listed himself as having two children. My Grandad and an ‘Arthur Patrick Crowley’ who we have never heard of. Arthur then appears on Bexley CoE list of deaths and shows him as having died at 5 years old.
This is all I have and when I enter his details into GRO they are unable to find either his birth or death certificate?! Does anyone have any ideas why this might be or where I could go for more information?

Arthur P C BASNETT J-M 1916 Woolwich mmn Basnett 1d 2182

Arthur P C BASNETT b abt 1916 death J-S 1921 Dartford 2a 571

The above seem to fit although it's interesting that the birth was registered after the marriage in 1915.

Welcome to RootsChat, Beth.

I would say the child might have belonged to an un-married sister of Elizabeth Crowley, nee Basnett.
There were a few sisters in that family. Arthur’s birth certificate should give you the answer.
Milligan - Jardine – Glencross – Dinwoodie - Brown: (Dumfriesshire & Kirkcudbrightshire)
Clark – Faulds – Cuthbertson – Bryson – Wilson: (Ayrshire & Renfrewshire)
Neale – Cater – Kinder - Harrison: (Warwickshire & Queensland)
Roberts - Spry: (Cornwall, Middlesex & Queensland)
Munster: (Schleswig-Holstein & Queensland) and Plate: (Braunschweig, Neubruck & Queensland & New York)

Welcome to Rootschat!

Arthur shows on the 1921 index with Elizabeth Ann and Daniel; although I don't know how much more information you would glean from it. (His birthplace is given as Woolwich, as Christine has already shown in Reply #1)

This is so helpful thank you so much!

So it appears he was adopted and sounds like a good theory it was an unmarried sister.

Sorry total newbie here. How would I go about finding the information you found?

Sue, this is great thank you. The Arthur Patrick born in Darlington could be something as this is where the family came from. Again, would you be able to help me find this? Do I use the Volume 10A/Page 91 somewhere?

I don't think the Arthur P Basnett born Darlington is the right one - I see a marriage for him, and a death for him in 1965. His parents were John Basnett and Emily McNulty - married in 1902 Darlington.

The birth certificate you are after is the one registered in Woolwich.

Neale – Cater – Kinder - Harrison: (Warwickshire & Queensland)
