Where to start looking for Hugh Griffith
« on: Monday 30 January 23 21:41 GMT (UK) »
An inscription on Hannah Griffith gravestone reads
Hugh Griffith. who died at Kargoorlie, Australia, April 3(could be 5) 1916.
Hannah and Hugh were brother and sister.
Family stories had him leaving Caernarfonshire and going to South Africa,
I have no idea how to start looking for him and would appreciate any help one could give me.
Thank you

Most likely Kalgoorlie in the Western Australian goldfields.

There is a Hugh Griffiths age 25, single, Quarryman, arriving in Fremantle Western Australia in Sept 1903, onboard “Orontes” from London. Do not know if this is your man.
He looks to be travelling with 2 other quarrymen of around the same age - Hugh Jones & John Humphreys

Thank you very much,
Hugh was born around 1877
On the 1901 census his occupation was a quarry man. I have not found him on a later census,
The Trove report supports the family story that he went to South Africa.
His father was John which make me think that the entry on the gov page is the correct one, debating whether is it worth it to buy a death certificate as I do not know how much more information it would show.
Hannah was not alive in 1916.

This document will show you what information is recorded on a death certificate, Western Australia.

http://www.jaunay.com/bdm.html

The informant for the death certificate, 1916, does not give a name for mother of Hugh John GRIFFITH, and sister Hannah is deceased.

"Family stories had him leaving Caernarfonshire and going to South Africa,"

Is this a family story that resulted from an earlier researcher looking around for Hugh GRIFFITH?...does this support the family story, or is it how the family story began?

Your heading has him as Hugh GRIFFITH. Do you see your Hugh, sister of Hannah, with a second given name?

Then the shipping information I have already given you in reply#2 is most probably correct. He then would have travelled to South Africa from Australia.

What do you know about Hannah?.  When did Hannah die, and with what name?.

Was Hugh John GRIFFITH in the Boer War?  Would a member of her family be the informant?
