1600/1 Baptism transcription query
« on: Tuesday 31 January 23 08:49 GMT (UK) »
Good morning,

I am seeking assistance with the following entry from the Bishop’s Transcripts (Baptisms) of All Saints’ Church, Batley, 1600/1:

Alice Jowet ? ? March 1.

FYI: the Baptism register pages are missing.

Thank you for looking.

Regards
Janet

Very strange - the two words after Jowet don't make sense at first glance. All the other entries have the name followed by s(on) or d(aughter) of...

Will have a think!

I think it's spuria baptiz[ed]. I'm not too sure of the ending on 'baptiz...' but there's little doubt as to what it means. And 'spuria' is one of the terms you may come across for 'illegitimate'.

The second letter of 'spuria' fooled me for a bit, but there's a nice clear 'p' just like it in 'Sharpe' on 27 July above.

Ah - I wondered! There's an example of the S that looks like a P in Sonne towards the top of the document too. Hat off to you!

All other baptisms show either the father, mother or both names, but not this one.

I agree it records a child born outside of marriage.
