Am I right in thinking from your post that you're querying which, if either, of these two sets of data is correct?

I can only see one David Guest born in Staffordshire in 1889:

Births Dec 1889
Guest    David        Dudley    6c   77
(from freeBMD)

A birth should be registered within 6 weeks, so registration in the Dec quarter of the year (ie Oct-Nov-Dec) means that the Oct 1889 date is more likely to fit than the Jun 1889 date.

David Guest married Lucy Boden in 1912

Marriages Dec 1912
BODEN    Lucy    Guest    Stourbridge    6c   320
GUEST    David    Boden    Stourbridge    6c   320

There are 7 births listed in the Stourbridge area between 1913 - 1927, with surname Guest and mother's maiden name Lucy. Alfred is not one of the listed names.

There was another marriage between a David Guest and Annie Guest in the Dudley district in 1913. It looks as though they did indeed have a son called Alfred.

So basically in the 1939 register you have two different families, both with a David Guest as the father. You will need David and Lucy's marriage certificate to clarify the name of David's father.

Well, I think David was "flexible" with his age.

In the 1939 register, his dob is as you say -- 1889, making him 50 years old.

However, in 1921 he was apparently 44. (This is definitely the same family - wife and two children match. There was also an older stepdaughter with Lucy's surname).

So it looks as though he shaved 10+ years off his age! So yes, if you want to know who his parents were, you're going to need that marriage cert.

There is a transcript of the 1912 marriage on freereg.  It states David Guest age 28 married Lucy Boden age 25 on 26th December 1912.  Place of marriage is Pensnett and they are both living at 12 The Dell.

David's occupation is given as collier and Lucy is spinster.

David's father is given as David Guest Labourer and Lucy's father is John Boden Labourer.

A note at the bottom states groom's father is deceased and groom signs X.

If David's age is correct that makes his birth year 1884.

The 1921 census shows David with a birth year of 1877.  I haven't checked the image as I don't have a sub that covers the 1921.  Seems to be very flexible with his age as Annie has said.

Birthplace is given as Sedgley, Staffordshire.

Sedgley is covered by the Dudley reg. district.  Below is one birth record from the GRO

GUEST, DAVID       GUEST
GRO Reference: 1879  S Quarter in DUDLEY  Volume 06C  Page 69

Is this an illegitimate birth or did both Mum & Dad have the surname Guest?

Last piece of information I am putting in.

Marriages Mar 1877
Bellison    Hannah        Dudley    6c   69
Guest    David        Dudley    6c   69

1881 census 6, Red Hall Road, Sedgley, Dudley, Staffordshire

David and Hannah with Eliza Bellerson step daughter living with Eli and Charlotte Guest.  David born 1839, occupation navigator.  Son David born 1880 Sedgley.

Right David?  Who knows, at this point your guess is as good as mine  ::)
