ISO Alice harriett corder 1877
« on: Saturday 04 February 23 23:39 GMT (UK) »
Hi there,
I am restauring a sewing box with a hand written name and date inside: Alice Harriett Corder 1877. There's also a Newspaper cut out glued in there. It says " Lady (young) requires situation in any light business, warehouse or fancy goods. Address A.H.C 2 East Terrace, East-Road, West Ham.

I did a search in the 1871 census and found an Alice H Corder, however she is said to have been born is Stepney Middlesex.
Any ideas on where i could look to confirm it is her and find more about her (marriage, death, occupation etc.)

Thanks!

That's an interesting one!

The only Alice Harriett Corder I can see at all had her birth registered in Mile End in 1864, and looks to have married in West Ham in 1890. Presumably the sewing box was a gift for her 13th.

I think she may have married Charles Clarke, a railway Clerk. Here they are in 1891 with one daughter:

and in 1901 and 1911 with a number more children:

Thanks everyone!
I'v found out yesterday very late (I did fall in a bit of a rabbit hole, admittedly!) About her marriage in 1890. Found the name of her husband as well, Charles Clarke, which matches with your finds.
Now to restore this beautiful box so that Alice can be remembered for another century ;)

Thanks so much for your kind help
