Dodd/Dod family Moreton 1600s/1700s
« on: Tuesday 07 February 23 03:40 GMT (UK) »
Hi,

Has anyone out there got anything on the Dod/Dodd family of Moreton,Cheshire in the 1600/1700s?

I am trying to go as far back as I can with this family and the name comes up as early as 1601 from what I’ve found so far.It would be great if anyone could help me fill the gaps.

My ancestor, Margaret Dodd was born in 1777 and baptized at St.Oswald’s, Bidston.I believe her father was Thomas Dodd.

Does anyone know if there is a connection between the Moreton Dodds and the Dodd family of Edge?

Thank you

Thanks Garstonite!!

A great start. Looking at the Cheshire parish record project database, I have found a Thomas and Mary of Moreton appear to be producing offspring for 36 years? (1758-1794).Is this likely?
They appear to have married in 1757, but then there is a Thomas Dodd marrying a Mary Williamson in 1774.It seems a bit confusing. Is this the same Thomas remarrying or another?

Any thoughts much appreciated!

So are you saying Thomas married ANOTHER MARY ?.... if the first Mary died in childbirth it is a distinct possibility ... :)
have you checked for a death /burial for a Mary Dodd from Moreton between 1757 - 1773 ?
ADDED
Just checked on CPRDb - no burial for a Mary Dodd in Bidston / Moreton  :-\

Hi,

This one is a bit of a nightmare to fathom out!

Thomas senior, wife Jane appear to have had twin sons, Thomas and Edward. Both sons had sons named Thomas and maybe married women called Mary.
So either Thomas married twice Or we have two Thomas’ producing children at roughly the same time. I feel like I’m missing something here.
To be honest, I’m having trouble getting my head round this one!

Hello
Quite confused but here's what I have
Thomas Dod married Mary Williamson at Bidstone both of this parish 27.12.1774
both made mark
Witnesses William Dod and Thos Wilson (the clerk)

Children
William 16 July 1775
Mary 29.7.1775 Moreton (this baptism was omitted note underneath)
William 22.12.1776
Margaret 5.10.1777,Moreton
James 30 May 1779 s of Thomas of Moreton lab s of Thomas and James Dod and Mary  d of John and Alice Evans
Mary 30 Jan 1780 Moreton
Jane 4 May 1783 Moreton
Betty 23.8.1789 Moreton
Thomas 7.3.1794 Moreton
Hannah 26.10.1794 Moreton

The other marriage
Thomas Dod and Mary Evans is also at Bidstone 27.12.1757 both single by banns

So 2 couples having children .
Thomas Dod 1758-18 Feb 1835 is probably the son of  the older couple born 10 Sep 1758.

His father Thomas Dodd 1724-21.4.1791  Moreton perhaps

Just to make it clearer to everyone

ps guessing a bit but perhaps Thomas and Jane with son Thomas 1729 ,Thomas born c 1707 s of Thomas ,Thomas son of William born 1685.

What does everybody else think?

Hi Ciderdrinker,

Thanks for your input.I think there is a lot of confusion regarding whose children are who’s.Because there is an overlap it gets confusing and messy.

We seem to have:

Thomas Dodd & Mary Evans
Thomas Dodd & Mary Williamson

The James you have b1779 is the son of Thomas and Mary Evans and not Thomas and Mary Williamson(see what Garstonite put above).
I’m not totally sure yet but it looks like father and son were both producing children at the same time and both wives were called Mary.

Thomas senior had a twin brother named Edward, who appears to have had a son named Thomas born 1754!
This only adds to the confusion.

My current best guess is:

John or William Dodd father of

William Dode b 1638
Wife Alice died 1673

Son Thomas b 1686
Married Susanna Jones 1704

Son Thomas b 1706
Married to Jane ? Who possibly died1761

SonThomas b1729
Married Mary Evans 1759

Son Thomas b 1758 who maybe married Mary Williamson

Untangling the Thomas Dodds is the problem.Any thoughts on this guess?
