I was hoping it said Elizabeth because I couldn’t find a Catherine but then I thought it might not even say Catherine because it looked like an O on the end. Thanks everyone

I think it says Catherine. If you carefully find the letters you will find that it is an elaborate 'e' on the end not an 'o'!

Whether it should have said Elizabeth is another question.

Re Kessen I am sure I replied, somewhere,  that in an Irish context this may be Cassan.

Sorry if this muddies the water yet again. When Thomas Crumly born 1851 died as a Retired Roman Catholic priest in 1930 aged 81 his parents are recorded as Joseph Crumly deceased and Mary Crumly nee' Fitzsinnons deceased.

Also when Mary Stewart died in 1890, she died in the Barnshill Poorhouse, usual residence 57, Richards Street.

The son Charles who recorded the death was of the residence 13 Chappell Terrace. Recorded Mary's mother as Catherine Crumley nee' Fitzsimmonds. We know that James and Elizabeth had a daughter Catherine born 11.12.1852 died 1863.
John

I wonder who was living at either of these addresses in 1891 census

John

I have been trying to follow this thread, but wow!  Confusing family!

Anyways, there is a photo (head shot) of the Canon Thomas Crumly in the Dundee Courier 19 May 1924. Page 3, with an article on him if you are interested.

I don't think this will help the hunt here, but just in case , the son, James Crumly that died in Ireland, as mentioned earlier by John, also had at least 2 children: the Rev Joseph J Crumly, and Mr. Thomas Crumly. (found from James Crumly's obituary)

Thanks I’ll have a look at the Dundee courier. Yes very confusing family. I’m looking at the 1891 census for the addresses that we know about but I’m struggling to find a connection. Mary’s address when she died has some Stewart’s living their but the head of the house Joseph Stewart was born in Ireland in 1864 and there are also a McKenna family living there born in 1848 that could have been related to her son James family that he married into. I’m struggling to find Charles Stewart on the census. I thought I found him married to an Elizabeth but I don’t think it says Mary for his mother. It’s very hard to read it.

The 1915 John Stewart death is indexed as:

STEWART
JOHN
55
CONNELLY
M
1915
572 / 2 / 110
BARRHEAD AND LEVERN

and to me, the written name also reads as Connelly.

Are you certain it is correct John and believe this should read Crumley or variations?

I’m pretty sure it is correct. This is his marriage certificate and he has wrote the name as Crombley on here
