Info only:

John William Stewart 1859-1915 can be found in 1891 & 1901 census in Middlesbrough with Sarah and lots of children. Children born in Middlesbrough have mmn as McKinney/Kinney. Not in England by 1911 census though. John died in the Barnhill poorhouse 27.4.1915 his usual address McAlpine Street.

Thanks. I’m still struggling to find John or Mary on the Scottish census before he moved to Middlesborough. I’ll keep trying

Great find John. I agree this has to be them. I’ll try and find out when John Stewart senior died.

Just adding link to other recent post as some of the info was already pointed out to OP www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php?topic=869698.0

John Stewart, potential father to John William, was showing as deceased when son married early 1880s.  He was a labourer by occupation, going by the earlier references for him. He got together with widow Kesson/Crumley. There are some potential census entries for a John Stewart in Renfrew censuses. The 1881 census is the first to be found so far, with Mary and son John. No sign of them as yet found in 1861 or 1871. The court papers (see the notes from the Register of Corrected Entries on the other thread) do state that Mary was in Bridge of Weir, Renfrewshire at the time of the paternity action in 1860 and John Stewart in Renfrew.

Unfortunately on that census the wife and daughter are both called Grace. I’ll still check out the death certificate

That’s ok thanks for all your help. I did check the death certificate but it doesn’t seem like the right one either.
