Hannah Penrice 1721-1783
« on: Monday 13 February 23 16:45 GMT (UK) »
Can anybody please help?
Hannah Penrice married William Little (1719-1771) at Gloucester Cathedral on 13th Jan 1744. Both were said to be from Leckhampton and were both buried at St Peters Church. I am trying to prove there is a connection between Hannah Penrice and Sir Henry Penrice (1677-1752).  Sir Henry was Judge of the High Court of the Admiralty but more importantly he was Chancellor / Vicar General to the bishop of Gloucester 1711-1752.  I can't find any Penrice family in Leckhampton or the surrounding parishes and I can't find her baptism record.  Sir Henry Penrice and Elizabeth Gore had two children Anna Maria b1718 and Spencer b1719.  I suspect Hannah was Henry's illegitimate daughter. Thanks

for the record - that tree goes back to Thomas Oxinden b 1410 in Wingham, Kent - so presumably John T  Langford is a descendant of the Oxinden Family

Garsonite Thanks very much.  There are very many FT's on a number of sites which show Sir Henry Penrice & Elizabeth Gore (married 01-05-1714 St Martins in the Fields London) had 2 or 3 children.
Anna Maria Penrice bap 18-01-1718 Saint Benet Pauls Wharf London.
Spencer Penrice bap 13-08-1719 Saint Benet Pauls Wharf London
Hannah Penrice? b1721? I cannot find baptism for Hannah, so no confirmed link to Henry & Eliz. All I have is the Gloucester Cathedral marriage cert to William Little 13-01-1744 but unfortunately prior to 1837 there was no need for fathers to be named. At that time it would have been very expensive to marry at the cathedral (William was a Yeoman) hence my suspicion that during his time as Vicar General from 1711 he COULD have had an illegitimate child and COULD have arranged and paid for the wedding. If Henry did have an affair in Gloucester it will be difficult to prove so I wont add him to my FT.

I'm hoping this will be seen! The original query is quite old.
I'm a historian working among other things on piracy trials in the early 18th century. Sir Henry Penrice as Judge of the High Court of Admiralty presided over many/ most of them. The discussion here has been his onward links, but I want to find out where he came from if possible. So does anyone know about his family background/ father mother etc. He married into the Gore family which brought him inheritance through his wife of Offley Place, which suggests he married up, so to speak.
If anyone has any leads - or even if they don't - I can provide a lot of stuff about Sir Henry Penrice personally - details of the house and supposed pics of it and pics of it, bios of him etc.

Sorry for the late reply, I've only just seen your post.
Yes I can provide the names of Henry's parents I'll do this for you in the next hour or so.
I'm aware of Henry's role as Judge of the Admiralty from 1715 but prior to this in 1711 he was appointed Chancellor of Gloucester Diocese / Vicar General and in 1714 he signed the Oath of Allegiance to King George (along with other high status individuals in the county) so he must have spent a lot of time in Gloucestershire dealing with legal matters. Do you have any details of his life in the county? It could be that his daughter of even his niece Hannah Penrice married my 6th Great Grandfather at Gloucester Cathedral on 13th January 1743 but I have no proof.  Many family trees say Henry was born in Gloucestershire but very unlikely because he was christened in London.
Thanks
Morangie

I haven't spent much time on this part of my FT but it appears that Henry's parents were William Penrice b1639 and Jane Oxinden b1649. Henry's siblings were Jane b1675, Ann b1678, Mary b1683 and William b1691.  I hope this helps.

Dear Morangie

At last someone answered! It shows the benefit of waiting patiently, so thank you so much. I can actually provide you with quite a lot of Henry Price himself - including pics of his way over-the-top tomb in the church at Great Offley and some biographical details if you'd like them.

But as I said in my post I'm interested to find out where he came from. His close colleague, Sir Charles Pinfold, another rich Admiralty lawyer was the son of a Thames waterman (i.e. a ferryman/ boat-taxi rower) who went to a famous charity school and rose in life (and has another elaborate tomb, but not quite so flamboyant) in in another church. So your info about his parents is really interesting. Could I ask where it came from from? If you (or anyone else reading this wants any of  my material I'll send it.

I should stress that I'm not in this out of a personal interest in the family - I've absolutely no connection to it! I'm a historian researching the history of a case of piracy in 1725 (John Gow was the captain's name). Penrice tried the crew in the High Court of Admiralty and I'm trying to find out about the way he ran the trial.

Henry Penrice b1677 was the 3rd of 9 children. Parents William and Jane (nee Oxinden) married in Adisham Kent in 1672.  All their children were baptised either at St Benets Gracechurch or St Helens Bishopsgate.
William was baptised in 1639 at Saint Olave Old Jewry. His parents were John b1607 and Hannah Greene b1613.  Jane's parents were Henry Oxinden b1614 Herne Kent and Elizabeth Meredith b1624 Leeds Kent.
I would be very interested in any information you have on Henry.
Thanks
