help with address in Deptford
« on: Tuesday 14 February 23 18:28 GMT (UK) »
Apologies if I have doubled this, thought I'd submitted then couldn't find it. From Elizabeth's marriage, can anyone decipher where she was resident please, looks like Norfolk Street but there isn't/wasn't a Norfolk St I can find in the vicinity.
Thx Paul

Hi
What year was this?
There was a Norfolk St in St Saviour Southwark, renamed Orange St.

I think Edward Harris lives at 12 Norfolk St (https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Norfolk_Street,_Strand), in the parish; and that Elizabeth Mady lives in Deptford.

Malton (London)
Eades (Somerset)
Johnson (Wimborne, East Dorset)
Hopkins (Roxburgh., Yorks.)
Kidd (Westmoreland)
Lake (East Cambridgeshire)

Have now found the original record - the marriage took place in 1881 not 1880.
Looking at all the details (church!) it is obvious that ajm is correct!

Apologies for 1880. I did a sneak peek on my Tree and picked the wrong one. Re part or whole certificates, in the past I have been asked for zoomed in clearer to read  extracts, but I appreciate full information helps with identifying more probable candidates and/or eliminating unlikelier.  I also read the 12 Norfolk St and Deptford below it as one address for both - I'm always learning.

I'd still appreciate any info on Orange St & Norfolk St St Saviour as I have other relatives in Orange St, if I can date the change that might give me a few more clues

I'll have a look later, but meantime I find this site useful for old & new names of streets in London. Unfortunately, it only states that the change was pre-1912. Norfolk Street still listed in 1891 Census, so change must have taken place after that.

Use this map: https://maps.nls.uk/view/101201652.
With the words Edition 1894-96 in the top centre of your screen pan down until you can see the Blackfriars Loop Line. Then go further down 2 streets running East to West and the second of these is Orange Street in St Saviour's parish, Southwark
