Duncan Family
« on: Sunday 19 February 23 06:40 GMT (UK) »
Would appreciate assistance with tracking the Duncan family.
George Duncan born in 1925 in Aberdeenshire. His parents who married in 1911 were William McHardy Duncan & Catherine Margaret Oliphant Shepherd.
The relative detail was Annie Duncan (deceased)...his mother??
Catherine died in 1960 drowning in Aberdeen Harbour. Death record states widow of said William McHardy Duncan. Mother Mary Ann Shepherd, no father, so illigitimate.
I am told that George had 2 siblings, a brother, William, who was older(?) and an unamed sister.
I have found that using Scotlands People doing searches where there are no 'images', order cert only frustrating...how do I know what certs to order?
There may a better way...Ancestry not very forth comng..or Family Search
Need the expertise of you good guys! Many Thanks! David

I see that the parents marriage has the district as St. Nicholas.  If you assume that George's birth was registered in the same district, there is only one for that district.  168/1/74 St. Nicholas.  This is for just George with no other names.

There are three others for that district, one in 1925, two in 1926, but they have second names.  If George definitely only had one name then it would suggest that the 168/1/74 one is most likely.

Hi David,
Just to clarify the images available on scotlandspeople for you.

If a BIRTH is under 100 years then you must buy the certificate at a cost of around £12.00 plus postage. A MARRIAGE under 75 years ago and a DEATH under 50 years ago same applies. It is to do with protecting those who may still be alive.

Outwith the above the certificate can be viewed and downloaded at the minimal cost of £1.50/6 credits. Less than the price of a cuppa so very good value for money. Admitidly it can be frustrating but all family research is and can be costly anywhere in the UK getting the correct certificates.

Now back to your Duncan family.

If it were me I would invest in getting the 1921 Scotland Census first for William McHardy Duncan and his wife Catherine. This will list any children living with them etc. Cost as above £1.50. That should tell you who William's siblings were - if born before 1921. Ref 168/1 14/6

I note from the SP Index that William McHardy Duncan died in 1945 aged 57 - again that is available to download - Ref No 168/2/63 - St Nicolas, Aberdeen.

Hope this helps,

Dorrie

Dorrie, Thanks for your help & advice.
I have today by trawling thru SP the birth & death if George's brother called William
Also the birth of his sister, Barbara Ann.
Have spent hours for the birth record of William McHardy Duncan between 1888 & 1889 with no joy. Viewed the Williams without mothers name in case McHardy not in the list.

On the 1921 census where does it say William M was born?  Does it give a precise place of birth or just Aberdeenshire?

What were the names of the children listed?

Thank you Millmoor...very interesting...cert states mother Agnes McHardy (underneath) Duncan. Fathers name James McHardy..Going back to his death record the mothers name is Annie Duncan.(?!)....assuming its his mother?
Wonder when James & Agnes married...
The 1921 census states  place of birth Aberdeen Aberdeen
The names of the children William and Barbara which tie up with my investigation.
Thanks guys for all your help..David
