Mothers Name
« on: Tuesday 21 February 23 18:18 GMT (UK) »
Good Evening one and all,

Hope you can help once again.
I am researching a Charles Chalke b1768 in Bower Chalke Wiltshire.
His father is William Chalke.
Then I have hit a wall.
On Genealogical sites, they only list a Christian name for the mother.
There are 2 William Chalke’s listed.
One married Sarah Downes and one married Sarah Joliffe.
Hopefully somebody can help me decipher my issue.
Many thanks as always

Sorry about the above.  :)

Some questions to help you sort out the dilemma - is there an occupation for William noted on the baptism of Charles? Or on his subsequent marriage?  Can you see both sets of parents (ie 2 x William and Sarah CHALKEs) baptising children around the same time - where are these baptisms? Are they in the same area? Is there an occupation for William, or an abode listed on any of the baptisms? (to help separate the 2 families). Do you have the marriage records for both William's?

From what I can see, Charles' parents had their first child in 1758:

John, son of William & Sarah Chalk, baptised 5th October 1758 in Bower Chalke.

They then baptised children at fairly regular intervals until 1772, when their last child, Anne, was baptised.

William Chalk, of Bower Chalke, married Sarah Joliffe, of Fifield Bavant, on 4th October 1756 in Fifield Bavant. The banns were recorded at Bower Chalke.

This marriage fits perfectly with what we know about your William & Sarah.

William Chalk married Sarah Downes on 27th December 1769 in Downton, Wiltshire. Both were of the parish of Downton.

I don't think this marriage fits.

Queenie  :)
