What is the date of this studio taken photograph ?
« on: Thursday 23 February 23 16:11 GMT (UK) »
Can anyone help me date this studio family portrait please ?

If I can narrow down the date a little, I should then be able to identify each of the children shown in it

Thank you in advance of your help

Patricia

Hi Patricia:

Had a quick search through Trade Directories and censuses.

Trade Directories for 1887 and 1891 list Albert R Pickett as a photographer working from the studio named on your photo in Main Road, Bexleyheath.  Trade Directories for 1899-onwards show that the location of his studio has moved from Main Road to Broadway, Bexleyheath.  Unless he continued to use old card stock (unlikely) then your photo would have been taken before 1899 (at the latest).
Hope that helps to narrow your time frame.

I think it looks 1880s but not sure.

I'll bring it to Jim and Carol's attention.

Lovely photo, he has a kind face.
When I saw it I immediately thought where’s their mother ?

Is there a sad story behind the photo ?

Not that I think it is particularly important, but I don't think Albert Pickett moved premises. Main Road used to be a continuation of a much shorter Broadway at the end of the nineteenth century. Both formed part of the Dover Road or to give it its Roman name, Watling Street. I suspect that as the centre of Bexleyheath expanded, the name Broadway was extended westwards to include what had been Main Road. I have confirmed this with the Bexley Local Studies Centre.

Thank you all for your thoughts so far.
The picture is of a grandfather with his grandchildren.

The youngest little boy on the left in the short trousers is believed to be Patrick CLARK born 1892 and I thought he looked to be around 4 years old which would make the picture to around 1896.

So from all your comments, I think I am now pretty comfortable that this picture was taken somewhere mid 1890's

Thank you everyone
