Just can’t find the death registration
« on: Thursday 23 February 23 18:57 GMT (UK) »
I am trying to find the death certificate of my great great grandfather -died 1885. I can find his burial record in the parish registers but no formal death registration. Is this common?
Thank you

Thank you.
Samuel Whitbread
Died quarter 4 1885. Buried at High Laver in Essex age 44. May have died there or in West Ham/Bow.
I think I have found an entry in England select burials and deaths of Saml Whitehead which could be him. Has correct wife’s name of Hannah ( although known as Ann) And daughter Jane ( actually Emily Jane !)
Again, thank you for your help.
I just can’t find a death registration entry

A death certificate should have been produced before burial.

What exactly does the record from High Laver say? Have you seen the original image?
I can see a Samuel Whitbread death aged 40 in Ongar district in Dec quarter 1886, and wondered if that might be him. Perhaps the year on the burial has been misindexed and should be 1886?

The 1881 only has one entry for Samuel Whitbread.  Birthyear shown as 1842 and he was living in the Ongar RD.  Wife Ann

Burial transcription shows burial date as 17.11.1885

A death certificate should have been produced before burial.

Not strictly true - a death can be registered after the funeral in some circumstances

Perhaps the year on the burial has been misindexed and should be 1886?

Much more likely - and in fact the Essex burial transcripts available on FindMyPast do give the date of burial as 17th November 1886.

Thank you so very much for your replies.
I have ordered the pdf from the GRO so hopefully will find it is the right person. The age is wrong …. But that could be immaterial.
Thank you again
