Illegitimate birth
« on: Wednesday 08 March 23 12:09 GMT (UK) »
Hello

An aunt was born illegitimate in 1910. I have copies of her birth, marriage and death certificates -all in Scotland. Her father's name is not recorded on any of these three.
An expert told us there is no case against any person in any Scottish court for maintenance.

Is this the end of the road for finding his name?

We are not interested in going down the DNA road.

thanks

Welcome to Rootschat  :D

Just as a matter of interest what was the aunt's name?  Sometimes, but not often, there is a clue in the names given to the child.  How close to the 1911 census was the aunt born?

Have you had a look at the 1911 census to see where she was living and who the neighbours were?

Not everyone is interested in having their DNA looked at, not something I have ever bothered with.

It is very difficult to find the father of illegitimate children and most of the time finding the father is unsuccessful.

Local Archives may hold bastardy registers.  These types of records can record putative Father's name and full address if a Mother filed for financial support.

One of my ancestors, not on my direct line, was unmarried, but had several children. She was a farm labourer, living in one of a row of ten tied cottages (now converted into two semi-detached cottages). The son of the farmer, about her age, lived in a house adjacent to the tied cottages. All the children had his surname as a middle name. I don't know who their father was for certain, but I'm willing to make an informed guess.

Hi swanndir.

Welcome to the best site on the internet!

Girl Guide's suggestion is a very good one. In researching my wife's family I turned up an illegitimate ancestor named Wilfred Harry Kirkup B....... (surname deliberately omitted). I put the question of who his father was to this forum and the general consensus was that someone named Harry Kirkup was probably the father. This might be worth looking at.

Good luck with your search.

Peter

I agree that middle names can be very informative, several examples make it as obvious as it can be without actually naming names on birth certificates.

Welcome to Rootschat.

May I ask how she is an Aunt?

Logically she must be a sibling of one of your Parents?

Trish :)

Might be an aunt by marriage ie married to the sibling of a parent.  But a good question. If she is an aunt by marriage then if their are children of the marriage they might have clues, also I would ask all cousins.  Some times Aunts whether familial or by marriage, bond with cousins and may have spoken about her family while doing dishes or out driving.

This brings up the importance of information gathering across our own generation ie cousins etc as part of family searching.
