Tracing a relative
« on: Wednesday 08 March 23 12:40 GMT (UK) »
I noticed in several postings a common thread. My second great grandfather was born in November 1819. He married Elizabeth Beynon 1819-1890 on 7 May 1845, he was a servant on farm Gellicefn Rhos in Talley Caio region of Carmarthenshire at the time. Unfortunately for me on his marriage certificate his father is listed as being David Jenkins. I can not decide as to whether the curate/vicar made a mistake or that Thomas Davies was illegitimate. David Beynon father in law was from farm Ffynhonau gleison.
I don't know how to get past this point.

Welcome to Rootschat  :D

Do you know where Thomas was born?  Have you looked for any likely baptism?

Who were the witnesses on the marriage certificate?  Sometimes they are relatives.

If the welsh patronymic naming system was in use, Thomas the son of David Jenkins could easily be known as Thomas Davies.

Many thanks for your informative replies, it's appreciated. I have verified the entries of his children and their descendants. The idea of investigating the witnesses is something I haven't pursued with any conviction and it is something I should look into.
The marriage to Elizabeth Beynon in Talley is correct and I believe he was born there and the reference to Bank Cefn Rhos  also correct. I have several possible baptism dates which made more sense until I found David Jenkins as father on marriage cert. In Llansawel 10 Aug 1822 parents as Thomas & Margaret. December 16 1819  parents as David Davies and Mary Davies both Llanycrwys and finally Feb 1822 with parents David and Rachel Davies Llandilo fawr & no document.
My grandmother was Church of England/ Wales

Thank you Ray for reminding me of the Welsh patronymic naming system it's something I hadn't considered Wynne Thomas
