Cuthbert St, South Shields
« on: Thursday 09 March 23 22:46 GMT (UK) »
Hi
Looking at old Census 1861, South Shields, Cuthbert St for J Wilson.  Google and bring up Cuthbert St in Hebburn.  Is this the same street?  I am assuming because of St Cuthbert's Church behind the street. Cannot find the street name in old maps.
Thank you for your help.

You're welcome jamxr, I love looking at old maps, and definitely the side by side view is very useful.

Lots of mentions of Cuthbert St over the years in newspapers - storms, fires, family notices etc. Happy to look up a family or an address on the off chance if you are interested. For example, though probably a bit later than your J WILSON: a William WILSON of 46 Cuthbert St mentioned as secretary of South Shields and District Band of Hope Union.

In the 1871 Census the family were living at 26 Orange St, South Shields.  Could you find please?
There is a William Wilson bc1846 in the family and wouldn't have a clue where he went.  My connection is with George Bowman Wilson who settled in Australia.
Is there anyway you can check if Robert Wilson who married Mary Jeffreys Dalton in June Q 1885 is my Robert bc1858 South Shields to parents Joseph Wilson and Mary nee Cubby.

Orange St appears here on the side by side map

A handy way to find streets that are mentioned on census is to look at the surrounding street names on the census, or the enumerator's route which appears on the first page, in your example from Westoe in 1871 "comprising the whole of Campbell street, Zion terrace, Frederick Street, Gladstone terrace, houses not named in Laygate Lane, Holy Trinity Parsonage, Thorney Terrace, Laygate terrace, and Orange Street."  :D

I think the best way to check if your Robert WILSON married Mary Jeffreys DALTON would be purchase the marriage certificate and see who he names as his father. I have had a quick look at the resources I have but can't find a copy on-line.

You could start a new thread asking if anyone has access to the parish records for the marriage, not sure which church it was in though - I have looked at marriage_locator.co.uk, it says "Sorry, we cannot locate the church for this marriage. The entry is located between entries for Gateshead St James and Gateshead Venerable Bede, both in RD Gateshead."

It could very well be that Robert and Mary married at a Register Office - the page number, 1033, is very high.  :-\
Transcriptions and NBI are merely finding aids.  They are NOT a substitute for original record entries.

In case you haven't seen it - Death notice for Joseph:

"WILSON- At 26 Orange Street, South Shields, on the 23rd inst., Joseph Wilson aged 58 years, after a short and painful illness, served 25 years' faithful service with Wm. English, saddler. Internment tomorrow at 1.30. Friends please accept this intimation"
   Friday,  Dec. 24, 1880
Publication: Shields Daily Gazette

For interest, there is a death notice for "Charles William Anderson, infant son of Drill Instructor J. Norris, 6th Durham Rifle Volunteers" who died on 15th Feb 1862. They are the household next to your family at 72 Cuthbert St in 1861.
