Attempting to locate Great Grandfather and mother
« on: Saturday 11 March 23 18:35 GMT (UK) »
Hi, I am new to RootsChat,  I have started looking for my father's family in Ireland. I have run into a roadblock in trying to ID his grandparents. I do not have much to go on. His name was Peter McCann his estimate date of birth was 1841, he was born and raised in Cootiehill, County of Cavan, he was a farmer. His wife is Mary Brady also from Cootiehill, I beleive they were married in 1856? They had 16 children; all I have been told left Ireland to come to America because of the horrible conditions there and no work available. I think he rented land in the Kildrumsherdan area and Larah area. If you have any hints of suggestions ?

Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

Cootehill is in the RC parish of Drumgoon
https://registers.nli.ie/parishes/0824
A challenging register to put it mildly.

Early parish registers don't usually give parent's names so even finding his marriage may not bring you back further.

Did find the birth of one of the children
Michael in 1868
https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/images/birth_returns/births_1868/03418/2253845.pdf
But the handwriting is terrible so finding it difficult to read the address
Drum-something but so many places start with Drum in the area.
Can you give some names and birth years of other children born after 1864 in Ireland to see if the writing on birth cert is clearer.

Marriage 30 Jan 1856
Peter McCANN and Mary BRADY
Witnesses   ? SMITH and Ann? BRADY.  Perhaps also William McCANN, I don't know why he is at the bottom of the page on his own.

Godparents Mark? Brady and Rose Higgins

Be careful if you stray off the page as they are out of order and you have to wander around  :)

These years do not fit with your research though.
If Peter was married in 1856, he would not be born in 1840s so the baptism would not be him. :-\
