Stuck on Deciphering Two Words -1687 Will
« on: Sunday 12 March 23 14:26 GMT (UK) »
Hi folks, the attachments below are taken from a 1687 will - Joan Cantrell of Wetton in Staffs leaving a farm to Anne, the daughter of her nephew Thomas. The three words at the beginning of line three (above the the name Thomas Cantrell) on the first image looks like the name of the farm but cannot for the life of me work it out. Any ideas?

The other image shows a little more of the same passage for context.
Many thanks
Cope, Tunnicliffe, Steele

The first word is Great and the second could be Brasse, although I'm not happy with the initial letter. Perhaps it is a capital G and therefore Grasse. I'm sure someone will along soon to identify it,

Apologies, but isn't the third word "Farm"  :-\
Transcriptions and NBI are merely finding aids.  They are NOT a substitute for original record entries.

I don't think so. I think it's Pann.
The first letter is a capital P.
A capital F in this hand is usually written ff.
The letter r in this hand is written like a small w (many examples in the extract).

Nonsense. We all see these things differently.

Looking at the full record on FindMyPast, I see the inventory has an item ...

Sorry, I wasn't meaning to be "sarky" and that inventory makes sense - a large brass pan (in modern terms).  Our ancestors' wills make very interesting reading.
