ANNIE PAYNE
« on: Sunday 12 March 23 14:46 GMT (UK) »
Before he married my grandmother my grandfather was a widower.  Family story says his first wife committed suicide not long after they were married on 4 August 1900.  She does appear on the 1901 census, living with my grandfather in Lambeth in March 1901.  She is not a direct ancestor of mine but I am fascinated by her story.

Her maiden name was Annie Payne, daughter of John Payne (a farm labourer) but she was living at 5 Anderson's Cottages, Lambeth, as was my grandfather, when they married.

She was married to William James Carlisle King who worked for the Metropolitan Gas Company in Vauxhall, London.

Try as I might, I cannot find a death for Annie King in Lambeth.  I have found a death registered in Malling, Kent but no further information about her.  I have ordered a death certificate for the Kentish Annie to see if there is any further information there.

There is another John Payne with a daughter Ann in the Lambeth 1901 census, but this has to be a red herring.

Does anyone have information about this young woman?

Thanks for your response.  That's correct.  Henrietta M Price was my grandmother and WJC's second wife.

As you say there is no death for an Annie King in the time frame in London. The only one I can find of the right age is this one in Kent
Annie King age 21, September 1/4 1901 registration district Malling Kent vol 2a page 433.
Did Annie have any connection to kent?

Edited
FreeBMD says Malling kent which is about 30 miles South east of Lambeth but there is also  a Malling in London which is about 7 mile East of Lambeth

Edited (again!) should have read your post properly  :)

Maybe she was committed to an institution in the Malling RD if she had mental issues, and sadly took her own life there. There may be a newspaper report of an inquest.

Annie may have been born in Yalding in Kent - about 4 or 5 miles from Malling.  Possibly Malling is the nearest place to report a death.  The 1901 census has Annie born in Lambeth and my grandfather born in Yalding.  This is wrong.  My grandfather was born in Lambeth so I presume Annie was born in Yalding.

It would make sense for her to have been born in Yalding since, on the wedding certificate, her father was shown as an agricultural labourer.
