Where to find information on inn keepers back in 1830 onwards
« on: Monday 13 March 23 21:07 GMT (UK) »
I have a relative called Margaret (Peggy) Elliott who according to the 1841 census was an inn keeper.

Please could someone put me in the right direction of finding perhaps a register of Inn Keepers or a list of Inns and their landlords and ladies.

I don’t seem to be able to find anything using google, I have a feeling I’m asking the question in the wrong way.

I hope that makes sense.

Thank you very much x

You don't give a location. I can see an innkeeper of that name in Southfield, Great Marsden, Lancs in 1851 - is that her?

I should also add her Husband James Elliott was also an Inn Keeper.

I see the 1841 census simply lists the address as "Public House" in Southfield.

Looking at newspapers, in the mid-1870's there is mention of an inn there called the Sportsman; and a couple of years later the Shooter's Arms (could be the same place - it was the same landlord).

The Shooter's Arms is still there and is said to have been there since 1660.

Oh my goodness I’ve had the odd tipple in the shooters arms on many occasions when I was younger, I need to look into this in more detail I think, thank you very much for your help Shaun, I really appreciate it 👍
