Marriage in Clifton or Clifton Campville
« on: Friday 17 March 23 12:47 GMT (UK) »
Hi everyone
I'm struggling with this one. One of my ancestors Edward Finch b 1785 married Mary Rush b 1783 in June 1809. Both were living in Etwall Derbyshire as far as I can tell. The marriage records show that they were married in Clifton Campville Staffordshire on 23rd June 1809. However there is a text only record that shows the same two people getting married by licence with the licence dated 22nd June in Clifton Derby. Are there two differnet people or is it a mistake. The text only entry is headed Marriages and Banns Staffordshire and Clifton Derby is not in Staffordshire whereas Clifton Campville is. Also when I search in Ancestry for Edwards death it pull up the record for Mary who was buried on 10th April 1853. Whats going on!

A marriage licence was usually obtained the day before the marriage - hence 22nd June and 23rd June.  One set of records prob contains date of licence whilst the other shows date of marriage.

I thought that about the dates. The Clifton or Clifton Campville thing is probably just a mistake although it does seem to be a long way to go to get married when travelling cant have been easy

You should try and see a copy of the marriage licence.  My guess would be that, although they might have the same residence for the 3 weeks prior to marriage as required, maybe one of them came from Clifton Campville and so banns might have been read there.  Conversely one of them might have come from Clifton, Derby or similarly with Etwall.

I think it is only one couple and viewing the actual licence (maybe held in the record office) might sort the situation for you.

you can access a scan of the licence and the parish marriage on Findmypast.  It notes both bride and groom as of Clifton, Derbyshire. The diocese is Lichfield & Coventry. Edward was noted as husbandman.

Hi
The Marriage Licence is on FindMyPast, under
Staffordshire, Dioceses Of Lichfield & Coventry Marriage Allegations and Bonds, 1636-1893.

Dated 22.6.1809
Edward Finch of the Parish of Clifton, in the County of Derby, a Husbandman, Bachelor, aged 21 and upwards.
Mary Rush of the Parish of Clifton, in County Derby, Spinster, aged 21 and upwards.
The marriage was to take place at Clifton
Edward also swore that Mary Rush had been resident in the Parish of Clifton "hath had her usual abode for the space of 4 weeks last past"

Bondsmen
Edward Finnch of Hilcott, parish of Clifton Husbandman and
Charles Parnell, parish of Nuneaton, Warwickshire, a Gardner

Edward Finch makes his mark.

So would suggest that wherever the transcript you quote came from it is incorrect.

Hi,

I note in 1851 Census of Etwall, Derbyshire Mary states she was born Nuneaton, Warwickshire.

Think this is indication that Charles Parnell, per my last post, has some family connection to Mary Rush.

Apologies if already know what the connection is.
