Family of seaman James Shaughonessy/O’Shaughonessy
« on: Friday 17 March 23 21:54 GMT (UK) »
Hello from NZ,

I am interested in finding out the family and background of a seaman named James Shaughonessy/O’Shaughonessy. He died while working onboard the ship the Geraldine Paget. James died on December 26th, 1874 and the ship arrived into Lyttelton Harbour, New Zealand the next day on December 27th. At the moment it is difficult to say if he was buried on land or buried at sea (even though sometimes record state died at sea, they can sometimes be buried on land). I have found one occurance of James' surname being mispelt as 'Thaushaeorg'.

I have attached two records of his death. Any help of information about his family or background would be wonderful.

Kindest regards,

Ashley

It says he died 26.12.1875 - not 1874 - see your post above

www.freebmd.org.uk has a birth June qtr 1851 Manchester for a James O'Shaughnessy - his mothers maiden name was Jackson

Also a birth in 1850 for a James Shaughnessy in Manchester

With so little info it's impossible to connect him to this seaman as the surname is spelt differently on the 2 documents

How does he connect to your FH?

The dates given in the articles below do not support an 1875 death or an arrival date of 5.1.1876

I am researching for a document about passengers and seamen who died coming to Canterbury New Zealand. I find passengers easy to find the families of - but finding the families of seamen is rather difficult.

Any assistance is terrific.

James died on December 26th, 1874 and the ship arrived into Lyttelton Harbour, New Zealand the next day on December 27th.

The 2 documents you posted both have a date of death of 26th December 1875;)

Date of arrival (according to the documents) was 5th January 1876.

At January 1876 I think the "Geraldine Paget" is i  Liverpool -

Britishnewspaperarchives
LLoyd's List 7 Jan 1876.........The Geraldine Paget,, Ogilvie, arrived here from San Francisco, reports that, oh the 16th Nov., in lat. 3$ S lon. 33 W, she was caught aback ..

The second image you have posted has mention of 19 January Liverpool?

Far too little info to determine his ancestry correctly - particularly as this is a hobby rather than Family History.

We already have a possible variation in the spelling of his surname & now have a difference in his birthyear dependant on whether he died in Dec 1874 or Dec 1875

I suggest you follow the births on freebmd shown in my earlier reply to see if either appear on the 1881 census.  If they do then they can be eliminated.

You also need to bear in mind that failure to register a birth in England & Wales only became a fineable offence in 1874 so there is always the possibility his birth was unregistered

His surname has Irish origins & he may have been born in Ireland but then the family came to England hence Manchester.   There was a potato famine in Ireland 1845-1852 and a great many people left as a result

All census info is available free on www.familysearch.org so you can see if there are others of his name/birthyear on the 1861/1871 censuses for Lancashire (Manchester)

https://www.familysearch.org/search/collection/list?cqs=England+census

1861 - variations - Shaughnessy then also  Shangnessy &  Shocknery (living next door to each other each with a son James)

The 2 documents are wrong - he definitely died 26th December, 1874.
