Unknown burial place in Drogheda Ireland
« on: Sunday 19 March 23 13:58 GMT (UK) »
Hi all,

I'm looking for information on my father's grandfather. He was called Patrick Michael McGauley. Died 16th Dec 1941 Discharged Soldier cause of death Tuberculosis in Rotlunda Hospital in Dublin, Ireland. He lived at his mother's address caring for her until she diee at Patrick street in Drogheda, Ireland. She was Sarah McGauley nee, Rourke.

I've rang around all of the church parishes even trying to contact the archbishop of Armagh searching for either him or his mother's grave. Also trying under McAuley and other variants. But either I've had no success or no return phone call. I've even checked in  a book of Cord Cemetery grave names. Any suggestions or information would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

Welcome to Rootschat  :)

Here is Patrick’s death - address - William Street
https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/images/deaths_returns/deaths_1941/04695/4252790.pdf

This looks like Sarah’s death - Peter Street with Patrick the informant of Patrick Street

The streets are in the same area.

Thank you very much for the Swift Reply I was looking under Williams Road in Drogheda and obviously couldn't find it. So thanks for that and the information on Sara h. Do you have any idea why my searches are turning up blank for grave sites for either Patrick or Sarah?
Would it be possible they are buried in unmarked graves?

Thanks again for the help!

Have you checked where the husband/father is buried?  They may be buried with him.

On Findagrave there are at 10 cemeteries in Drogheda

Have you checked them all?
https://www.findagrave.com/cemetery-browse/Ireland/County-Louth/Drogheda?id=city_229585

Having had a quick look I can see a variation in spelling of this name as McGawley.

PS Welcome to Rootschat from me.  Hope you have a great time here, your fellow researchers are a great bunch of people!

Hi,

Thanks for replying to my query. I believe (what information I have) that the father/ husband is buried in Dublin (south) , so I've never looked into him. I I'll take up your suggestion though as the information on the father/ husband may be wrong.

I'm not sure about that amount of cemeteries In Drogheda as the parish receptionists I've spoken to have advised me of the cemeteries. But of course I may not have received the full / correct information.

Of the surnames I know that are many variants which include:.  Gawley (McGauley McGanley McGawley) McAuley, McGale amongst others. I'll
keep trying with your suggestions, though and appreciate the help you've offered. If you do think it anything else or find any information, please let me know.

Many thanks :)

So why would it not be a possibility that the mother/son would be buried with the father?

What is leading you to think that the two are buried in Drogheda?

Rather than speaking to parishes I would look at places like Family Search and Findagrave first.

Some of the records I've been also to gather  show that they both died in Drogheda. So.. I've assumed they were both buried in Drogheda 🤷‍♂️

Including this one posted in the thread by heywood..

So I've assumed they they were buried in Drogheda 🤔🤔🤔

Is this your family in 1901 - living in Newry? Sarah is a widow.
http://census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1901/Down/South_Ward_Newry/Castle_Street/1247750/

I cannot see a death for Daniel -husband/father in Dublin, apart from this one. The index shows Daniel McGanley but the record shows Daniel McGann
https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/images/deaths_returns/deaths_1900/05772/4631713.pdf

Is that the one you have?

A few years ago, someone told me that they had been looking for a grave in a churchyard. There was a strong belief where it was but no marker. They enquired from the church but no records were kept/retained.

I am not sure how Find a Grave works with regard to records of unmarked graves. Some authorities refer you to that site, so presumably they hand records over but if there are no official records then you are in difficulties.
