Do you put media records on Ancestry?
« on: Tuesday 21 March 23 15:10 GMT (UK) »
I have been having a discussion  ;D with a family member re the pros and cons of putting media (as in  births, marriages, deaths etc) records on my Ancestry tree. They are utterly against it. My argument is that my tree is private and what is the harm. Apparently there were some changes in Ancestry's policy re media not long ago and this is the basis for their argument against putting media on my tree. Although my relative is honest in stating that they are basing their argument on something they saw somewhere on Facebook.

I was curious to know if any one else has this same issue re media on Ancestry. Thank you :)

My brother-in-law was taught to play the guitar by Ray Honeyball of Hedgehoppers Anonymous, and he is heard on the record "It's good news week". Both backing and some vocals.

I have been trying to upload a copy to Ancestry for a couple of years. When I queried them, they said that it was not a facility that they currently offer. I saw your post and had another look and there it was! I could now upload and I just have. Thank you.

To answer your question, I am all in favour.

Chas

If I remember correctly the change to Ancestry's term and conditions gave them the copyright for ever on any documents, photographs etc. that people added to their trees, this is probably what your family member is referring to. I actually moved my trees before the change and deleted them from Ancestry, as far as I am concerned any photo, I or any members of my family have taken, they own the copyright to not Ancestry.

Okay that must be what they are referring to re the change. Thank you. Hmm. Removing the documents will take some time. A new hobby :'(

On a different topic but some what similar.

I have just finally convinced a cousin to make her tree private. I was horrified to see my uncle's passport, birth cert and death cert on a public tree. That took a year. I don't hold out any hope of getting her to remove those documents based on Ancestry's change of policy ::)

I would not do that at all.

I use Ancestry as my main tree and for searching, but I have Roots Magic on my PC and Laptop.

I add media to Roots Magic as required.

There is a feature of the software called Tree Share, and to get started with Roots Magic I downloaded a copy of my Ancestry tree.  Now any changes to the Ancestry tree is shown up in Tree Share and I can add the changes to Roots Magic.

So my Tree and all the family media is secure and under my control and better still is that the software has a feature where all the family tree and media can be placed on a USB memory stick which can then be shared with family.

How can Ancestry claim to hold the copyright on, for example, any US census image?  Such US government documents are by law not copyrighted and are freely in the public domain.  Many (but not all) US states similarly do not copyright their documents - this would include birth, marriage and death certificates in those states.

Also there is the Irish Genealogy site. All the records are free.

I am sure we have discussed this before and the answer we came to was that copyright remained with the holder, but Ancestry was free to add it as a "hint" to anybody else's tree.

I am sure someone will be able to correct this.
