Impossible to find my grandfather
« on: Wednesday 22 March 23 17:22 GMT (UK) »
I am finding it very hard to find my grandfather William Douglas Ransome born on 29/12/1883 in Kilburn, London death. I know that he married Annie Kimber in 1916 and that they had four children. William shows in various records with the last known record being the 1927 Electoral Roll where he is living in Hampshire. On his son's marriage certificate in 1953, he is listed as deceased though on his daughter's second marriage in 1952 he is listed as the father and as a painter and decorator so presumably still alive.

In 1901 he is with his parents John and Harriet and sister Florence. They were living at 25 Windmill Lane Bushey Herts. William was listed as general labourer and his father John was a carpenter & joiner.

There is a Royal Navy card for William available on Ancestry. He joined in 1904 and left in 1906.

He was baptised on 31 Jan 1884 at St Augustine C of E Kilburn.

Wanted by the police in 1931 and apparently arrested

https://search.findmypast.co.uk/record?id=TNA%2FCCC%2FMEPO6%2F056%2F00736&parentid=TNA%2FCCC%2F2B%2FMEPO6%2F00793865

You can't assume he was alive in 1952 just because the daughter's marriage record doesn't say he was dead.

Possibly also known as William Wilson do you think Shaun?  (Last line, the Berkeley offence)

Added, also, was the arrest in 1934?

He married Annie Kimber on 5 June 1916 at Basingstoke Registry office. The marriage certificate is on a tree on Ancestry. Annie died in 1927.

According to a tree on Ancestry he had 3 children before the marriage and one after the marriage.

Hi all,

Thanks for all your help! I know he married Annie Kimber and about the children. I did see the information about the navy records and arrest warrants on find my past but after that is where the information ends.

See case number 32 for details of the alleged offence. Mention of a daughter in Southampton:

In 1901 he is with his parents John and Harriet

It looks like the right family, but I think the image shows his dad as James?

Yes William's parents were James Ransome and Harriet Mary Balls - I have been to the plot where they were buried
