Reading the death certificate it would appear he arrived in Melbourne Hospital, midwinter, already very ill with TB and was not able to inform much about himself and there was no-one else who could either.

He died the same day as he was admitted.

There is not much about his life to be learnt from the document other than he maintained he was still a butcher.
And not with his wife and it seems.

Hi Sue.

Interesting. I guess there are a lot of things that we just don't know and filling in the gaps is very time consuming. The newspapers on that day commented about the wet weather, so it's probable you're right that his health declined rapidly. I think "exhaustion" is a clue to that, and it suggests to me that he probably fought hard to survive.

Looking at the certificate details, I'd suspect that Septimus quite possibly died mid-afternoon or early evening and that Dr. Williams might have seen him during his morning or afternoon rounds (my hunch is soon after one of the rounds). I can't see any evidence that he died the same day as he was admitted, but I'm happy to consider that it was possible. Tuberculosis was a death sentence in those days, and it could kill in months. Hospital costs were not cheap and they weren't covered by health insurance, so you might well be right.

What I didn't mention was that I have found no evidence or record of him leaving a will. I suspect that would support the probability that he and Rosa were separated. It's also possible that he had nothing to leave.

I'm finding some rather odd things about Septimus that make me suspect that he was a bit of a slippery character. If he arrived on the Lavinia having worked his way here after having been caught as a stowaway, then I'm not confident that he was a model of a fine, upstanding member of the community. Still, the more I find out the better informed I'll be!

Thanks for your help.

Peter

Yes,
He may have been there longer than just the one day, but only speculating.

FYI.
I checked my CD of the Melbourne Hospital. It is an incomplete listing of  admissions 1856 to 1905. It often contains biographical information about patients.
He is not listed >:(

Thanks for telling me that, Sue. Where does one get the CD? I'd be interested to look for other relatives.

Where was Hilda born?. Who was the informant?

When and where was the birth registered?
