Hello Rootchatters,

This is the earliest Scottish document I have tackled and I find the penmanship very challenging.  Although I have about 80% of this document transliterated there are words and passages I just can't decipher on my own.  So, any help is greatly appreciated.  There are 8 parts in total that I need help with so I'll post 4 in this post and 4 in my next post.

Thank you.

Fifth part:

Q[uhai]rof [= whereof]  ye quot is [com]ponit [= compounded] for - - - - - - -iij lib

The quot or quota is usually also entered in the margin of the page. It was a twentieth of the deid's pairt payable for confirming the testament. Sometimes it was less or even free if the amount of the deid's pairt was very low.

roume & maling in Rashiefeld To ye said David barbor

"kindnes of his roume & maling" - a roum is an area of rented land and a maling is a lease. Kindness here means the right to a lease because you have held it for a long time or your ancestors have.
