Kia ora

Just not quite sure what this says and what it means.
Ellis Palmer died 30 March 1665 registered at Holy Trinity, Guildford, Surrey.

The piece I am unsure about is
'master of the Spittle'
'mariner of the Spittle'

Between 'of' and the word 'Spittle', not sure what that is either.

I read "Master of ye Spittle."

Maybe it was a ship?

I'm thinking more of the hospital or "spital"/spittle house. In Spital Street perhaps.

Thanks for both of these.  I had looked for a ship previously and couldn't find anything.  Hadn't thought of a hospital couldn't find one.  Then I found this a few minutes ago in Guildford:

The continuation of High Street, outside the old town limits, was called Spital Street, but that still doesn't really make sense.

"Some research revealed that Spital Street was an abbreviation for Hospital Street, which referred to the ancient Leper hospital which had stood at the junction of Epsom and London Roads until the 1840’s."

Thanks for this.  However I still don't think it makes any sense with what is written on his death notice.

Not sure what you mean here. Do you mean that you have other evidence for an Ellis Palmer you know of which disagrees with this?

(There was a Trinity Hospital or Abbot’s Hospital in Guildford which had a master, details here:

https://www.british-history.ac.uk/vch/surrey/vol3/pp547-560  ) It is a few paragraphs down the page,
name in capitals.

Website here, note the email, it still has a master:

No not at all.  I was querying what those few words said and I wasn't sure that your suggestion made sense.

So are you saying (and I have looked at the things you sent, had already seen it in the Borough of Guildford info) that what is on his death registrations is

Master of ye Spittle (Spital in fact ) - which was what exactly, administrator of the hospital?
