Elizabeth Malyon's family
« on: Wednesday 05 April 23 19:08 BST (UK) »
This post is to ask for any ideas about a strange story in my family; my great grandfather was James Moles (1853-1930); he was illegitimate but I believe (by DNA analyses) his father was James Bygrave who subsequently married his mother (Rebecca Moles). James Moles (1853-1930) moved from Stotfold to Poplar when he was 21 with his pregnant girlfriend (Ellen Millard). Their first child was called James who was always known as James Moles (or Moules) (1876-1939); the parents married 6 months after the birth of James. I am descended from a younger brother of James (1876-1939). Ellen died (of typhoid) in 1896 leaving James with a young family. Now the interesting part - on 19 Dec 1897, James Moles (1853-1930) and his son James Moles (1876-1939) at the same church in Bromley by Bow married two separate women - both called Elizabeth Malyon. I think from the research I have done suggest that the two Elizabeth Malyon's were in fact mother and daughter. I can provide my reasoning if anyone is interested. I think we have the mother Elizabeth Malyon (1844-1899) and the daughter Elizabeth Malyon (1876-1853) - these dates have to be confirmed. I would be interested in hearing from anyone familiar with the Malyon family or anyone who can comment on the consanguinity issues the two marriages raise.

Children of Elizabeth MALYON

MALYON, RICHARD   (Illegitimate)
GRO Reference: 1871  D Quarter in POPLAR UNION  Volume 01C  Page 649

CLARK, JAMES
Mother's maiden surname: MALYON
GRO Reference: 1874  D Quarter in WEST HAM UNION  Volume 04A  Page 16

CLARK, ELIZABETH
Mother's maiden surname: MALYON
GRO Reference: 1876  J Quarter in POPLAR  Volume 01C  Page 614

They are with George CLARK, a labourer born Suffolk, in 1881 at High Street, Bromley.  All three children were baptised at the workhouse in July 1881.  I doubt that they were married.

I think both marriages were legal?

Firstly as a newcomer to this site, I managed to delete (I think) my initial reply before posting but if two versions are seen please accept my apologies and also for my late reply to the comments. I'll try to make some extra comments.

Elizabeth 1844 - I think it is now clear that her parents (Benjamin & Elizabeth) moved from rural Essex to Poplar (presumably an economic migration). After 1861, the records for Elizabeth are sketchy  but the Poplar Workhouse records have the baptisms in 1881 of her four children - the fourth being Mary Ann, who died aged two. The comments about the "marriage" to George Clark are a great help and I'll focus my research on this. Certainly this explains why Elizabeth 1844 describes herself as a widow. There may be a reference to Elizabeth 1844 in the 1891 census (described as a widow) living with son James; separately I think son Richard is a junior merchant seaman in 1891, but strangely there is no mention of Elizabeth 1876 - I'll look into this as well.

Elizabeth 1876 - I now think she is confirmed as the daughter of Elizabeth 1844 and George Clark. I'll focus on her early life following up the comments - many thanks once again.

The marriages of James Moles senior and junior are, I have also concluded are legal but may surprise the greater Moles family; a father/son marrying a mother daughter is a bit unusual - thanks once again.

As an aside James Moles senior married three times, the last in 1917.

Many thanks once again

Peter
