What happened to Esther Price (nee Hunt), born 1788?
« on: Friday 07 April 23 07:24 BST (UK) »
Esther Hunt was the daughter of Thomas and Esther Hunt. She was baptised in St Nicholas, Leicester, 1 Nov 1788. Still a minor, she was married by licence in St Nicholas on 26 May 1807 (her father, Thomas Hunt, dyer; she signed “Easter Hunt”) to William Price, a dissenting minister from St Martin’s parish in the town, aged 31.

I wonder whether anyone can find what happened to her subsequently.

Many thanks Rosie, that is interesting. I actually know quite a bit about the other children, she was really the only mystery.

When do you last have record of William and Esthers childrens baptisms as that could give a clue as to where they were living

Sorry Rosie, I’m being dim. I thought you were referring to Esther Hunt’s siblings (who also had these names). I’ll look further into Esther Price’s children.

I’ve now located the records (except John). Eliza was born in Huddersfield, Thomas in North Shields, and Mary Ann in Norwich. I’m not sure what the connection with Manchester is (was it just where the register was compiled?).

(Just in case anyone else finds thus useful in future, Esther Hunt was the daughter of Thomas Hunt, born 1757, who was apprenticed to Thomas Millis, gardener, in Leicester in 1768 and married Esther Irish in Anstey in 1779. He became a dyer and a Freeman of Leicester in 1789.)

I've only looked at Thomas's baptism which I found at FindMyPast but if you look at the beginning of the register it states "This is the General or Conference Baptism Register of the Methodist New Connexion. Besides this there are in the Community numerous other Registers kept in the Chapels throughout the Connexion - these may be called local ones. This General or Conference register has been kept by the (book?) steward of the Connexion from the time it was first used...."

It is a lengthy note but it is signed by Wm Shuttleworth, the Editor (and something I can't make out) & Steward of the Book Room of the Methodist Connexion. The place given is Abraham's Court, Market Street, Manchester.

So it looks as if your assumption is correct. The Methodist Connexion Chapels kept their own registers but there was also a main one kept in Manchester. I suppose a bit like the PRs and BTs.
