Children of Stephen Umpleby
« on: Sunday 09 April 23 20:53 BST (UK) »
I have found that the brother of one of my ancestors was named Stephen Umpleby, a Catholic who was living in the late 1600s and early 1700s. He was baptised at Hampsthwaite but appears to have moved to Burton Leonard (where his sister also moved to) and had at least 2 children with a lady named Elizabeth. So far, I haven't found a marriage record for Stephen and Elizabeth but I live in hope!

There are words written in the PRs for both of his children that I simply cannot make out! Maybe a fresh pair of eyes can help  ???

John a bastard child to Stephen Umpleby and Elizabeth Umpleby

Mary an incestuous child of Stephen Umpleby

So no marriage to find.

Oh dear  :o

This may be a silly a question but I suppose incestuous had the same meaning back then as it does now?

well, yes, but in the meaning of prohibited degrees of kindred, I wonder if Elizabeth could have been Stephen's sister-in-law. Possible burial for Stephen 13 April 1718 in Burton Leonard and possible for Elizabeth 30 March 1729 but she is noted as widow.

Interesting! There was a burial for Jane, wife of Stephen Umblebie, in 1708.  So you could be right with Elizabeth being Stephen's sister-in-law...
