1911 Census
« on: Thursday 13 April 23 13:22 BST (UK) »
Hi I have been searching for the following ladies in the 1911 census but just cannot locate them at all.  I have even tried travel in case they were out of the country.  I have the husband/father living in Eastbourne with his sister at 25 Carlton Road, Eastbourne, stating he is married, yet cannot find his wife Eva Burns Gausden born 1879 ( could be under name of Kidgell) or the daughter Georgina Frances Eva Burns Gausden, born 1905 (again could be under mothers maiden name of Kidgell).  Previously Eva was living in Hampshire using the name of Gausden (husband George Gausden) even though they were not married.  I have them in Hampshire in the 1901 census that is Eva and George.  He was a Yacht/boat builder, born in Eastbourne.  Eva and George also had a son in 1916 so I know they were together but they eventually did split up so in 1911 may have been separated for a time.  Any help would be greatly appreciated.  Thank you.

I realise this is not what you are seeking, but I have found them in Eastbourne in 1921, mother in Princess Alice hospital, two children alone in Marine Parade.

In 1916 she is advertising in the Kent and Sussex Courier to buy old clothes from 257 Seaside, Eastbourne. I checked that address in 1911, but she is not there.

I guess that you know about the 1916 newspaper report about "Matrimonial Difficulties"? From that article:

Quote
Mrs Eva Gausden deposed that she was married in...1914.. [and] lived with him [George Gausden] in Carlton-road until she went into business about a year ago.

This is his address in the 1911 census, but as you say, she is not there. This article also states:

Quote
She had kept the three children during the past month.

Was there another child that you know of?

Yes I do have all other info.  Just the 1911 census I am struggling with.  There was a son born in 1915 George Francis John Gausden.

Have you considered the possibility that she was a suffragette and therefore did not get entered in the census?

No I had not thought about her being a suffragette.  I guess it is possible.  Is there anywhere that lists names of supporters?

Electoral Registers 1914, Eva Burns Kidgell is living in Church St. Willingdon, Sussex.
She is still there in 1915 under the same name and address.

Ancestry has a collection: https://www.ancestry.co.uk/search/collections/61005/ (England, Suffragettes Arrested, 1906-1914). I don't find her at first glance, but with two unusual surnames that could easily be garbled, especially if the handwriting is poor, she might still be in there...

FindMyPast also has a Suffragette collection that might prove useful: https://search.findmypast.co.uk/search-world-records/suffragette-collection

Of course, there might be another explanation - they could have been in transit somewhere and just not counted. I assume you've searched by first name/YoB/location only?
