Help please, trying to trace a newspaper extract
« on: Thursday 13 April 23 14:58 BST (UK) »
Hi.  I am continuing to research the history of the limited company I work for - Till & Whitehead Limited - originally based at Chester Road, Hulme, Manchester.   I found in the *very limited* company records the attached.  This appears to be an obituary for one of our two founders, namely Frederick Whitehead.   He died in December 1925.   For a business which has been trading since 1876, we do not have an image of either Till or Whitehead..... apart from the attached.   The wording states "Head of the firm of Till and Whitehead, wholesale ironmongers, of Chester Street, [ nb INCORRECT SHOULD READ *ROAD* ] the deceased had a busy life....... "

I have searched on Ancestry and FindMyPast for a newspaper with this image but nothing comes up.  It must surely be on one of the Manchester or Oldham ( where he lived ) newspapers but I've had no luck.   The attachment is scanned from a piece of paper which is NOT yellowed so must have been printed, I suggest, in the last 20 or 30 years.

Please could anyone help if they know of any other way to find this obituary / report ?

Thank you    Stuart

Are you familiar with OCR and how these newspapers have been captured digitally? Need to understand why the article might be there but "lost" because of misreads. Have you wondered why searching can return snippets that include "gobbledeygook/nonsense" but looking at the original everything looks fine.

Something you can check is if the year you might be interested in is covered. For example, he died Dec 1925. You can use the "Date, Place and Newspaper" filters to identify what newspapers covered that period. It surprised me. Are you aware that there are "gaps"? Some editions are missing.

No easy answer.

Thank you.  The image I have is "lined" and as you say, is most likely a problem for the scanning process if that is the condition of the original process.   I've tried to search as you suggest and cannot find anything - alas !    So near and so far from seeing one of the founders !

Nineteen newspapers have been grouped under "Place, Manchester", ranging from The Athletic News (covers 1875-96, 1899-1911, 1913, 1921-1931 ) to the Womens Gazette and Weekly News (covers 1888-89)
Checking 1925, only ONE of the nineteen is available on line for that year - The Athletic News! It's a weekly.
Checking 1926, TWO are on line - the Athletic News and the Manchester Evening News (a daily).
Such are the "gaps".

If you had a date of publication of the photo, and there were papers on line for that date, you could "read/browse" the edition page by page. At least the item would be easy to spot were it there. If you had a "rough" idea when it appeared you could plough thru' edition after edition around that time - but it's a slow process. You'll appreciate the "rougher" the idea, the wider the check. It can be a laborious process.

There's one "Place, Oldham" paper on line but it doesn't cover the period you are interested in.

Best of luck

Have you searched the British Newspaper Archive? Most of its collection is also available at FindMyPast, but its indexing is better. While I don't have a BNA subscription, I have a free account, so use its search, find results FindMyPast's search missed, and then browse based on the BNA result, which includes the page number. Just a thought...

Thanks.......  yes, I have taken out a 7 day free trial on the Newspapers.com archive and found all sorts of fascinating snippets but no feature with the photo which I have a poor copy of.  So frustrating that I cannot get to where this image resides. ....

Have you tried Manchester Archives?
https://www.manchester.gov.uk/info/448/archives_and_local_history

Follow the links on that page, they seem to have some local newspapers for the timeframe you are looking for.
