Census figures
« on: Thursday 13 April 23 15:42 BST (UK) »
Can someone help me. I am looking at the 1939 census, a portion of which appears below.

Joan Bennett (Bradley) 1928. 49 Woodfield Avenue, Flint Flint M.B.Flintshire Wales
Joan Bennett (Davies) 1930 10 Luton Terrace, Llanelli Llanelly M.B. Carmarthenshire Wales
Joan Bennett (Mendelsweig) 1917 Church Walks, Orms Key, Llandudno Llandudno U. Wales

You will notice that the index name is Bennett but other names appear in brackets. What are these names and how do the names relate to the person?

The 1939 register (not census) was updated by the NHS until the 1990's.  The surnames of most women who married after it was taken were amended to their married name.  The name that they were known as in 1939 shows in brackets on the index.  If you looked at the original copy you will see that the bracketed name is actually crossed out and replaced by the other name, there should be some indication alongside as to the year that the amendment was done

Snap  :D
Transcriptions and NBI are merely finding aids.  They are NOT a substitute for original record entries.

Thank you all the people who replied. I must remember 1939 'register' and not 'census' 1939. It does actually say 'register' on Findmypast - must pay attention.
