Where was Mrs. Williams buried?
« on: Wednesday 19 April 23 05:05 BST (UK) »
Hello everyone,

This is a followup on a previous inquiry: https://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php?topic=867578.0

To provide you with updated research, the Christchurch Library or any online databases do not list Mrs Williams as a burial in Lyttelton or Christchurch. So that means she was either buried at sea or at Camp Bay Quarantine Cemetery in Lyttelton Harbour. I have checked the deaths at sea record and Mrs. Williams is not mentioned amongst the other passengers who died at sea on the Ivanhoe. And in the newspaper she is the passenger given a date of death.

This is a paperspast article https://paperspast.natlib.govt.nz/newspapers/LT18640614.2.17?end_date=30-06-1864&items_per_page=100&query=Ivanhoe+Williams+Waipara&snippet=true&start_date=11-06-1864

does it sound like she she died as the Ivanhoe was being towed?

More details:
The family were
husband - Charles Williams (b. 1825 d. 1881)
Mrs. Willlams - Isabella Ann Downes (b. 1832)

Children:
Katherine Williams (b. 1859)
Arthur Edward Williams (b. 1860)
Florence Rose Williams (b. 1861)
Constance Isabella William (b. 1863)

From my research I figured Isabella died June 13, 1864. The problem I am grappling with is they were quite well off financially - it is highly unusual for a cabin passenger to be buried at Camp Bay Cemetery. But the Ivanhoe was placed into quarantine.

Your opinions and thoughts are very welcome.

I infer from the article that Mrs C Williams died of fever on the passage out from England.  Only Mr C. Williams, 4 children and a servant are said to have arrived at Lyttelton on June 12.  I expect she was buried at sea.

If you go back to your resource for "Deaths at Sea", you'll probably find that Mrs WILLIAMS is listed as
"WILLIAM - Isabella - page 359"  [Note: "WILLIAM" without an " S " ]

[Others who perished on the voyage of the "Ivanhoe" (although the ship's name is not referenced) > namely,  Letitia Middleton / Mary Jane Middleton/ Rhoda Smith / George Markham ... to name a few, also have the reference number "Page 359" -- source : GRO Marine Indices (1846 to 1902) :      I have no further information - only giving this source so you can follow up on it : ]

My answer -- given in your previous thread -- remains, NO.  ;D

the official list furnished by the officers of health - which lists 25 deaths.

The ship arrived Sunday 12th with sickness on board, health officers inspected the ship on Monday 13th at 9am and ordered ship into quarantine.

So that's a New Zealand record "official list furnished by the officers of health" ... is it ??
Or, is it the list (of deaths) which was printed in the newspaper  ???  ["Lyttelton Times" - 14 June 1864 ] ?
Helps us if you can give the resources you've consulted, their appropriate titles.

And I'm already accquainted with the details of the "Ivanhoe" being in quarantine ... dates etc.  ... from your previous thread.
