William Smith and family - Wine Trader in Madeira 1815-1823?
« on: Tuesday 02 May 23 19:57 BST (UK) »
I am researching my wife's family history - her 3Great grandfather was a certain William Smith who was a Wine Trader or Merchant in Madeira in the early part of the 19th Century. I have found out a lot about Madeira and the wine trade with the UK; the British community (mainly traders) were called the British Factory and there are records of births, marriages and death available; from these records I have found that William Smith married a Ann Middlecoat (maybe a misspelling?). The will of William Smith also survives and putting this all together, it seems that William and Ann married in 1816, with children in 1817 (William Henry) and 1822 (Ann). I can find nothing about Ann Middlecoat or her family (I am sure from my wife's DNA analysis that Ann came from the UK). There is a summary of the marriage being recorded in the consular records and transcribed in the Cliff Webb collections, but I cannot find the original records.
Also the Madeira documents give the date and place of birth of William Smith as him coming from St Ives in Huntingdonshire in 1791 or 92, but a search of parish records doesn't fit with any good candidates.
This is a long preamble to my questions:
Does anyone know how I can find out more about British Overseas Marriages (Cliff Webb Collection)?
Any ideas on searching for the Middlecoat family?
Does anyone know good ways to search the Parish Records (births) for Huntingdonshire in the 1790's?
I would really appreciate any ideas how to move forward - thanks in advance.

You have mistakenly posted on "How to Use RootsChat (Please don't post requests here)" board.

I would say the Cliff Webb item ought to be at the society of Genealogists.  There are over 700 items listed in their library catalogue either written or transcribed by him et al.

But on FIBIS is this. (Which while relating to India, seems pertinent)

“ Previously there was a dataset called "British Overseas Marriages" 1818-2005, included some transcriptions of marriages at St John's Calcutta and, in spite of the dataset title, appear to be from the late 1700s/early 1800s. These were transcriptions, elsewhere [2] stated to be from records at the Society of Genealogists, and were very limited in information. Only the year of marriage was given, and there were no details of the spouse. See Calcutta for possible sources of these records. There were also records from other counties in this dataset. However, this no longer exists as a separate dataset, but appears to have been incorporated into the British Armed Forces and Overseas Marriages dataset above, as British Overseas Marriages (Cliff Webb Collection).”

Perhaps an email to the Society would be useful?
