Help to decipher location in Edinburgh
« on: Thursday 18 May 23 15:48 BST (UK) »
I'm trying to decipher the exact locus of a marriage which took place in Edinburgh in 1866.
I think the first part is Grants Place but I cannot make out or find on a search the second location which possibly begins with Dum....

Thanks for that - I saw Dumbiedykes when I was searching roads in Edinburgh but never thought it was that!
At least I got the DUM part right...

The Edinburgh Evening News, 9 Feb 1877 has an advert inviting readers to apply to "1 Grant's Place, Arthur Street"

Yet to find Grant's Place marked on any map but Arthur Street 1867 -

Again, many thanks for taking the time to help.
This was a particularly frustrating document for me because the writing was basically good and legible and the quality of the document wasn’t too bad.
Thanks again to both of you.

On the linked map, Dumbie Dykes can be seen at the right end of Arthur Street, going vertically upwards.

In this Scottish Post Office Directories (Edinburgh 1867 - 1870) link, there is a reference to
Grant's place, Cra ; gside place, 2
(Cragside? Craigside?)
https://digital.nls.uk/directories/browse/archive/86014835?mode=transcription

In the WiKi List of former Edinburgh street names:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_former_Edinburgh_street_names
it says:
Craigside Place - demolished to build Dumbiedykes

Not sure if all this helps, though...  ;D

Hi James

The 1871 census I think shows 1 Grants Place as multi occupancy. 62 entries for that address, with at least 14 heads of household. So, looks like it was multi occupancy, ie a tenement most likely.

Could be that Grants Place was just a building rather than a lane or street. hanes teulu found the reference for 1 Grants Place linked to Arthur Street.

Just found this https://digital.nls.uk/directories/browse/archive/85120109 from the 1867-68 Post Office Directory for Edinburgh and Leith. The James Spalding showing here also shows on the 1871 census at 1 Grant's Place.

A search of 2 Grant's Place on the 1871 census also shows it to be multi occupancy.

I can only see No 1 and 2 showing on the census, as showing in the PO Directory.

Brown Street? Would look to be linked to this street.

From hanes teulu's earlier map link, Brown Street is two below Arthur Street.

So we have Arthur Street, Salisbury Street and then Brown Street in parallel.

So still in that specific area.
