Rev. Owen Owens family search
« on: Friday 19 May 23 04:58 BST (UK) »
Hi,

I am desperately looking to solve a mystery for my mum, sisters and their family regarding a relative of ours. I live in Australia and i am getting myself so confused with how many similar names there are! haha ;D

Collectively, the family have been looking on and off for years for information on a relative of ours and always end up at the same dead end. We have information about his children and his wife's family, but apart from the name of one brother we don't know about any possible siblings or parents/grandparents etc.

His name is Owen Owens born about 1857 in Holyhead, Anglesea
He had a Brother, Richard, who was supposedly involved in making jewellery and grandfather clocks.

He studied at pontypool and became a Baptist Minister.

He was Rev. Owens at the Tabernacle English Baptist Chapel in Porth near Cardiff for 16 years (1880-1896). He appears in a census at this time as living in LLanwonno, Porth.

He married Susannah Williams about 1883 in Pontypridd, Porth. (we have a fair bit of infomation for her family). They had about 9 children together (We do know about them)

He, his wife and their children moved to Johannesburg, South Africa in 1896? where he remained (apart from a temporary trip back to wales around 1911) until his death - 29//03/1929.

If anyone has seen any info or knows anything more about him, then we would be so grateful to hear from you.

Welcome to Rootschat Liljay.

There are some excellent Wales researchers on here that hopefully can help you (not really my area of expertise)

Having said that do you have his M/C to Susannah Wiliams which would contain his Fathers name/occp?

Trish  :)

Sadly I don't have the marriage certificate no.

We have census records, a death certificate for both of them, but we have never been able to find anything with his parents/siblings names on it before he married Susannah.  :-[

We are starting to think that maybe he was part of some identity protection program and all his records have been deleted :P (hopefully joking!!) ;D

I am a little confused as the 1911 trip back to Wales must have been a bit longer than you know?

The whole Family appear on the 1911 Census in Rhondda.
2 boys born Transvaal and grandchild also.
10 children in all, 2 deceased.

The Marriage Cert is the only way to solve the mystery conclusively.

Thank you so much for that Neale1961.

Correct they do suggest 1855 would be his birth year. however, 2 different census' records place him at 1857, so we've never been too sure. I suppose a death cert would be more accurate.

Sorry, Could I please trouble you for a link to that record? I can't seem to see that one :(

No that is correct. He was minister in a church in Porth until 1896. They left for South Africa then.

They Were in SA for sometime before returning to wales(only briefly, but were present at the 1911 Census), with some of his children and a grandchild. They returned back to SA at some point after that census.

I am a little confused as the 1911 trip back to Wales must have been a bit longer than you know?
