Hi all! I'm a genealogy beginner currently researching Thomas & Mary Willis, residents of Mile End Old Town from 1841-1871.
Thomas W appears to have been employed in the piano manufacturing industry (initially by his brother-in-law Joseph Tongue), as a French Polisher and Cabinetmaker which is evidenced on several census records and the baptism / marriage certificates of his children.
Throughout this period, the Willis's are listed as residents of Cleveland St, and Union Street / Place Mile End, which I believe is connected to the Mile End Union Workhouse.
Unfortunately, his wife Mary is proving a bit more of a mystery! I'm unable to find a marriage certificate for them, hence I'm unable to establish her maiden name, or that of her father. She's recorded on the 1851 census as born in Portsmouth, Hampshire Abt. 1823, although a later record lists her as born in Berkshire..?
Help! Any advice as to how best to proceed would be gratefully received. Thanks in advance...
