Tam, Jessie's mother Mary looks to have remarried and her new surname is listed...but pretty hard to read!

In case Jessie's parents turn out not to be married, possible 1881 census entry:

Jessie Hay 34 Dressmaker b. Coatbridge, Lanarkshire
John Hay 75 (age a little mistranscribed  ::)) Son
Mary Fraser 27 Sister unmarried Fruit Sales Woman b. Coatbridge, Lanarkshire
Jessie Fraser 3 Niece b. Glasgow
James Lamb 17 Boarder

Address 54 Greenside St, Gorbals

There is an 1877 birth showing in the Gorbals for a Jessie Fraser to consider. Jessie McFarlane Fraser showed in 1901 as born in Glasgow c. 1878.

Hi Monica
Jessie Fraser McFarlane is mine…she married David McFarlane and that’s a photo of her marriage certificate!!
It’s clear that her mum remarried and I think it’s Scott!!!
What’s thrown me is her previous M/S….. I haven’t found any matches yet for Fraser marring Fraser. Some on Ancestry have her parents as James Fraser and Agnes Craig but I think it’s John….
Thanks for your help Monica

Jessie may have invented a father's name when she married David McFarlane....

Have you noticed the name of one of the witnesses to Jessie's marriage in 1897? Janet Hay...which likely takes us to the Janet/Jessie Hay from the 1881 census above. If that 1881 census is the right one for Jessie, it is likely that mother Mary Fraser was not married when daughter Jessie was born.

Janet/Jessie and Mary Fraser were I think the daughters of a Donald Fraser and Sarah More and born in Coatbridge, Old Monkland. Donald Fraser showing as a spirit merchant in 1851. May have died by 1861 where wife Sarah is showing as head of the household.

Have you viewed Jessie Fraser McFarlane's death (died in Partick, aged 66, in 1944?) to see what it says about her parents?

What number of Mansfield Street did Jessie give as her residence when she married in 1897? Can't make it out clearly.

The 1895 Valuation Rolls show a Mrs Mary Scott, widow, living at 34 Mansfield Street, Partick/Govan. Could this Mary maybe be Jessie's mother? Added: Not likely connected to Jessie given the 1911 census entry below.

Just guesses  ;)

I think this looks like Mary, Jessie's mum, in 1911 at 3 Market St Carlisle, Cumberland:

William James Scott 53 travelling draper b. Thursby, Cumberland
Mary Moore Scott 55 Wife b. Coatbridge, Scotland (More and variants was the maiden name of Mary's mother Sarah)
Catherine Fraser 58 single, Sister-in-law b. Coatbridge, Scotland

Census shows them as married for 20 years with no children from the marriage.

Connecting Jessie/Janet (Hay), Mary and Catherine, from 1861. All the daughters born in Old Monkland:

Sarah Fraser 43 spirit dealer b. Inverness
Jessie Fraser 18
Sarah Fraser 14
Catherine Fraser 11
Mary Fraser 7

Address: Bank Buildings, Old Monkland

This looks a likely entry for the marriage of Mary to William Scott:

Marriages 1st Qrt 1891 - Carlisle    10b   757
Mary FRASER and William James SCOTT

The census just after their marriage in 1891, Eaglesfield Abbey, Cumberland:

Catherine Fraser 38 Head dressmaker b. Scotland
Mary Scott 35 Sister b. Scotland
William James Scott 33 Brother-in-law draper

Wonder where Jessie was in 1891? Living with her mother's family or working?

Okay, couldn't resist  ::)

From Jessie McFarlane Fraser's death reg, confirmation of what we have above I think. So, her birth was illigitimate to mother Mary Fraser:
