"Goyer Phare" - Nova Scotia - did he exist?
« on: Thursday 25 May 23 19:37 BST (UK) »
Hi, I'm a descendant of Agnes "Ann" Phare (1827-1907), who was born in Pictou, Nova Scotia.

I'm writing as I don't believe that her brother "Goyer Phare" b 1824, son of John Phare and Agnes Pellow of Sourton, Devon, who migrated to Pictou, Nova Scotia ever existed. "Goyer" is in many ancestry.com trees

I can't find any documentary evidence for his existence. You would think he would be easy to find with such an unsual name. I can't find him in the baptisms in England or in the Canada census.

John & Agnes Phare's headstone says the family came to Canada in 1828. https://www.findagrave.com/memorial/167140145/agnes-phare

Does anyone know of any concrete evidence of his existence?

Thank you

The burden on proof is on those claiming he does exist, because it's really hard to prove a negative ;) He could also exist but not be the son of this couple. Are there any sources on these trees? Did "Goyer" have any children, supposedly?  Since the only evidence is multiple trees, it's most likely a single mistake, copied by a bunch of people who don't check sources.

Most often this happens when someone misreads a source and takes nicknames/alternate names for children as evidence of additional children.

For example, John Phare dies and his surviving children are listed as Agnes, James, and William.
Then when his wife Agnes dies two years later, her surviving children are listed as Ann, James, and William. An incautious researcher might assume this meant there was both an Agnes and an Ann, instead of recognising that Agnes and Ann are likely the same person.
Census information is Crown Copyright, from www.nationalarchives.gov.uk

Thanks for your message

it appears "Goyer" did not have any children. a death date is not given and no marriage. I think it's a mistake that was copied by many others.
The only way I could think he was put in someone's tree if he was in a family bible but def. not in the Devon baptism records

thanks
