DEANE INDEX 1823-1840
« on: Friday 26 May 23 02:16 BST (UK) »
Hi I am trying to find in reference to the documents I have attached these articles/items in Trove, which from reading on the BDA site that these items namely CO 201 are available on Trove.

Scans of the original TNA CO 201 documents can now be viewed online in the category ‘Diaries, letters & archives’ at trove.nla.gov.au.

I have looked at the above and see nothing for any of the names mentioned as indicated on the three documents I have attached ie WOODWORTH, ROSETTA sister to Michael BYRNE/S also MARK PHILIPS!

Can anyone see these on Trove at all??? Maybe I didn't look properly!!

Hope someone maybe able to help!  Regards Dianna

Hello Again

It seems to me that the Deane Index is on microfilm at the State Library of NSW and possibly the National Library of Australia.
I can't find anything on Trove (which is part of the National Library) so perhaps it has been referenced in error?

Hi shume
Thank you!  Yes it does seem that an error has been made (much to my frustration) re trove.  I looked at the Diaries, Letters and Archives as instructed BUT to no avail.  I will find them it will just take a little longer.  Many thanks Dianna

I am not sure what you have/haven't found.

The A-G names start here for 1832, but I looked at 232 images until the 'C' names started and couldn't see anything signed by Michael BYRNES.

I can't believe they went to the trouble of indexing names and didn't note a page number.  In the Sep 1833 one he is the subject, not the writer, so I assume you would have to read every letter/memorial to find it.

Hi Debra
Wow happy you found that.  I will look at it tomorrow I think as it seems there are hundreds of pages to look through.

Michael BYRNE died in Sydney in 1827 and he left money to this sister mentioned ROSETTA WOODWORTH she was living in Dublin so perhaps she was looking for more details on his death. I always wondered if she received her inheritance!

Hopefully that will be revealed by going through that reel up to 201/230 etc.

I'm not sure who the Mark PHILIPS is mentioned in 1836/1840!!  Anyway thank you so much for sending that link and now I know what I will be doing tomorrow morning.  LOL.  Kindest regards Dianna

Hi Just an update re the Deane Index.  I have spent the last two day's going over it all backwards and forwards.  LOL.

This is the upshot.  This one letter seems to be ALL there is on the subject of Michael BYRNE and sister Rosetta Woodworth.  It seems to me that the letters are actually missing from/re Rosetta!

I will still look into it though.  Just thought I would share what I have found and with a lot of help have transcribed the letter re Mr PHILIPS.

Stamped Received Aug 13th 1836.

Also/and copy to ? (for?) 15th August

1410

New S. Wales Received August 11th 1836 29 ?? UPPER FORT/BROOK street

Mr Mark Philips presents his compliments to Sir George Grey and would feel particularly obliged if he would have the kindness to give instructions to enquire into the particulars of any property left by the late Michael Byrne formerly of Pitt St. Sydney-

Mr Barnard of the Colonial Office addressed a letter to Mr. R. Bourke respecting the property of Michael Byrne on the 20th Of Dec 1832 and no answer having been received addressed a second letter to him on the subject on the 27th April 1835 to which no answer has been received-

Under the circumstances Mr Philips begs to request that an enquiry may be instituted in to the property left by the deceased & the result communicated to his sister Rosetta Woodworth 5 Whittle St Oldham Manchester.

Not sure who he is or what he has to do with anything though.  Kindest regards Dianna
