Help with mother's maiden name from marriage record
« on: Friday 02 June 23 17:47 BST (UK) »
Could someone help decipher the maiden name of the mother (line #7).  For clarity this is the marriage of Thomas Foster to Mary Foy in Spring Valley,  Illinois in 1889.  Thomas was born in England, but trying to understand his mother's name to try and track down his birth record there.

Thank you,
D.

Hi, and welcome to RootsChat.

The surname looks to be written Wilstonly or Wilstonley, but if that is a name, it's not common. I wonder if it might be a corruption of something like Winstanley.

However, to get us started, do you know anything else at all about Thomas? Date of immigration? First marriage and wife, and any children from that marriage who might have been born in England? Also his age (line 4) - I think that says 38, but do you have anything to confirm that (eg age at death)?

Not finding the link easily on Family Search, but is this the family in Hall, Bureau, Illinois in 1900. Everyone showing as born in Illinois apart from Thomas, wife Mary and eldest John? So, John and Mary could be from Thomas's first marriage (or Mary's)?:

Thomas Foster 47 b England
Mary Foster 36 b England
John Foster 18 b England
Mary Foster 15 (Added: Mary showing as stepdaughter in 1910)
Lizzie Foster 12
Luke F Foster 6
Annie Foster 4
Patrick Foster 2

Imigration year for Thomas is showing as either 1880 or 1882 in the 1900/1910 censuses.

John 18 and Mary 15 were Mary snr's children from her first marriage to Michael FOY in Durham, England.

Michael FOY married Mary FRAYNE in 1881. John Thomas FOY was born 1882 and Mary FOY 1884 both with mmn FRAYNE.

A few trees on Ancestry for this family.

Thank you all for the help. Yes the Springvalley, is his family he had with  Mary Frain (Frayne) and at least two of them are Mary’s kids John and Mary…(Lizzie I’m not sure) with Michael Foy in England from the 1900 US census. I just pieced this together recently and requested  the doc I posted, as I hadn’t connected the Foy name.

The findagrave link is correct for Thomas, he died in 1919.

My family line is from Thomas’s (ggf x3) first marriage in England. We believe the name of my grandmother is Mary Moran. His son born in England ~1876, also Thomas Foster (ggf x 2) came to the US and married Mary Ann Hamilton that marriage doc is where we have the Mary Moran name from. We know of another sibling Sarah born ~1880 that came to the US and married George Pratt.

I haven’t located either births as of yet for Thomas or Sarah.

There is an 1881 England census that lists Thomas Foster, wife Mary and three children (Thomas, Margaret, Sarah) that we believe are them.

A lot of Thomas’s and Mary’s :)

I only have my phone right now, but can post / link some of this when I’m back home

Thank you!

These are the US marriage entries of Thomas's children here in the US both indicate that their mother was Mary Moran.  I haven't found much of anything with that name, so I do wonder if it's a spelling issue.

Thomas Foster - Marriage Entry 1899:https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:939J-TG7P-B?i=377&cc=1803970

The 1900 Census lists Thomas as born Sept 1876,  immigration year of 1885. I assume at this point Mary had passed away, and they were coming to join their father in the US.

Sarah Foster (George Pratt) - Marriage Entry 1904:https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:939J-TG3P-Q?i=452&cc=1803970

I've also attached the 1881 census that we believe is the family.

Some of the online trees have Jane's maiden name as BUSFIELD. A Thomas FOSTER did marry a Jane BUSFIELD in 1854 in Durham, England, but whether they are the parents of the Thomas who married Mary FOY still needs to be confirmed.
